The only real purpose they serve is to make it legally enforceable to prosecute for trespassing should they perpemawpetrators be caught.  Stupid but true: trespassing can not be charged in the state of Kansas without posted signage.  Found this out while in school when our fraternity was trying to sell our house and it was empty for a time.  We caught a high schooler in it, but the police couldn't do anything because no trespassing wasn't posted.  Thank you trial lawyers!

I still find it amazing that either the sheriff's dept, the t-town gay pride club, or someone else doesn't stake out the sign area on game week.  Its a virtual lock to catch someone.
