So, just got it and installed.  HPCIQers please tell me what to do to make my experience elite.  Keep in mind that I only know how to:  Receive and send e-mails, surf the electronic cyberspace world and play flash games.   8-)

whoa, I can honestly say I have never used the windows key or even really knew it was there.  I will probably not take the time to adjust my typing to utilizing all that stuff but I can see how it would be elite if I did.  Give me more stuff like that.

If you have a lot of ram you could setup a ramdisk.  Move windows/ie temp files to it, and install portable versions of software like Firefox.  Don't know off the top of my head what software supports W7

But since you prolly don't know how, then just daydream about the speed you could be having by bypassing access to the hard drive.

I only have 4gb on my laptop.  Come over to my house and make it do whatever cool thing you just talked about or whatever.

Also, OT from windows seven but need windows input here.  I have a tv tuner on my desktop and sometimes like to watch a game on media center while listening to music.  How the f^ck do I mute media center without muting everything else on my computer!?  This has been infuriating me for over a year.

Also, low computer IQ people, post your computer questions that you are embarrassed about here so high computer IQ types can answer them.  Don't feel shame, look how sd just asked questions!  It's cool to suck at computers as far as I can tell!

Never used media center.  Also, hemmy does not own a tv tuner.

It's been a while but I think media center has a volume slider on it, doesn't it?

Windows 7 is pretty elite.  Good choice SD.  Do you have an Xbox 360?  Completely compatible with Windows 7.

Ever use a projector with your computer?  Press Windows Key+P and check that out.

Windows key + Home makes all windows minimize except the window that you're using.  Gets rid of clutter.

Ever get that annoying "You do not have sufficient rights" message when running a program?  Then you have to "run as administrator" ?  Well, no more.  Hold Ctrl and Shift when you double click the program and you automatically run it as administrator!

Tons more of elite tips, but I have to save some for the other guys.

I've got the same laptop as you and the same windows 7 upgrade coming to me, so keep track of everything you do and give me the lciq reader's digest version when I want it.

It will make you delete your Intel Wireless something or other before it will install.  Just do this.  It will make you unable to get on the internet wirelessly while it installs but whatevs.  When it installs it will update it or something so it wasn't a problem.  It took about 2 hours to completely update.  Rebooted about 10 times but you don't have to be there for it during the process after the very beginning.  This has been the sd lciq version of the process.

2.copy contents from windows 7 disc to flash drive

3.format c:

4.install w7 from flash drive

30 minutes

This seems complicated and nerdy.  Just do the thing I said.

In 3-4 weeks, tell me if there was really any reason to bother with it.  I do as little or less computer stuff as you, and everything works fine for me as is.  :dunno:

Can I "defrag" it?  Not sure if its physically possible to defrag a Mac.  Used to defrag the crap out of my e-machine though.  Any advice?

All hard drives become fragmented, its just the nature of storing and deleting objects of various size.  Because the file system cannot layout the files in order, over time there becomes gaps either in between different sets of data, or even the same piece of data can be stored on a different location in the hard drive.  Defragging the drive moves around the data and freespace to eliminate this, and improve seek times.

Depends what version of Mac OS is on that computer.  Many modern operating systems automatically defrag when your computer is idle, so it isn't really necessary.

JFC, yes you can.  Do that.  I can't believe I didn't think of that in the beginning.  Delete cookies then defrag the living f^ck out of it.

I, uh, ordered my W7 update from Dell about a week ago.  I check the mail and check for Fedex/UPS packages like 20 times a day and still no W7.  How long does that crap take to get here?

it getting lost in the mail is probably the best thing W7 will do for you, believe me.
