The Buffaloes are 2-4 (1-1) with wins over Wyoming and Kansas and losses to Colorado State, at Toledo, at West Virginia and at Texas. The Buffaloes are coming off of a season in which they went 5-7 (2-6).
QB Tyler Hansen is completing 57% of his passes for 192 yards with 1 touchdown pass (vs. Kansas) and 1 interception (vs. Kansas) in limited duty this season for the Buffaloes. He has also rushed for 1 touchdown (vs. Kansas).
RB's Rodney Stewart and Demetrius Sumler have rushed for 525 yards on 131 carries (4.0 yards/carry) and 5 touchdowns (all Stewart's) this season. Stewart took 24 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday night's win over Kansas. Sumler had his biggest game vs. Wyoming when he carried the ball 8 times for 37 yards (4.6 yards/carry). He is also a receiving threat out of the backfield averaging 2 catches/game for 7.2 yards/catch.
Stewart and Sumler will run behind an offensive line that starts one freshmen (RT Bryce Givens), three sophomores (LG Ethan Adkins, C Mike Iltis and RG Ryan Miller) and one junior (LT Nate Solder). It's an offensive line that has allowed CU's QB's to be sacked 15 times so far this season.
WR Scotty McKnight and TE Riar Geer have averaged 10.9 yards/catch on 60 catches for 656 yards and 6 touchdowns this season. McKnight caught 11 balls for 114 yards and a touchdown in the loss at Toledo. Geer caught 7 passes for 89 yards in the team's loss at West Virginia.
Defensively, the Buffaloes switched to the 3-4 in large part because of losses to graduation. The strength of the defense is at linebacker especially with ILB's Jeff Smart and Marcus Burton. SLB B.J. Beatty is counted on for the pass rush. In the secondary, FS Anthony Perkins is a playmaker. SS Benjamin Burney is back after missing 2008 due to injury. The coaching staff says that RCB Jimmy Smith is a potential star.
