I have a 5 year old and am thinking of getting a video game system.  He wan't a wii and I think that may be the best bet for him at his age.  Does anyone have a system they think would be better?  PS3?  XBOX?  I know nothing about any of them, but the wii looks to me to be more youngster friendly.

I'm no gaming expert, but from what I've seen, the Wii is all ages friendly.  I have a nephew who is 5 and he loves the Wii.  His mom loves to use it to work out with.

I just want a game where I get to use lightsabers.

Get a Wii and the Star Wars game... Then get on the net and buy the lightsaber that also holds the Wii remote... It's a good time...

I have five nieces and nephews in between the ages of 5-10.  They all completely love the Wii.

The first console my child will have is a super nintendo. After he/she beats Super Mario World, I'll get him/her any system they want.

Does the kid have any experience with games, or is it a first?

I think a DS might be pretty good, as well. Cheaper than a Wii and lots of kid-friendly games (but some that he'll like as he gets older too). If he just isn't into Nintendo then maybe a PS2? Lots of games for the PS2 and wouldn't cost too much.

He has a leapster which is kind of like a gameboy but for nerdy games like counting and learning stuff GTFOOMF with this learning crap.  He has some cousins that have a PS3 and a wii.  He likes to play their wii.  Thanks for all the great info.

Chingon ... he already has a hoop and a stick.

I have a N64 somewere but you can't find games for it anymore and the only game I had was NFL Blitz.  Don't think he will really like that one yet.

QFT I think my parents still have my atari in their attic somewhere.  Maybe I should just dust it off and let him play some astroids.  Or tanks.
