Anyone catch the KSU reference on SportsNation this afternoon? They were doing the "fanish or foolish?" segment when the topic of how important location is to football recruits. Colin Cowherd said it was important but if it were the only reason people picked schools then how come Kansas State is a good football program and they're in the middle of nowhere.

I don't listen to his radio show, and he strikes me as the kind of guy that is an annoying little weasel if you don't agree with him, but he's the kind of guy that makes you think whether you agree with him or not.

Facts are facts and to most of the country, Manhattan, Ks IS in the middle on nowhere.  But when people finally do make it to the Little Apple, if they aren't materialistic stuck-up snobs, they realize what we all know...it is a great little place.

I'm still convinced that use of university jets leveled the playing field on being able to recruit to schools a longer distance from a major airport and the Hemingway rule gave that advantage back to schools like ku.  There should be a rule change that schools over some distance from a major airport can use the jets to shuttle from that airport to the school.

can somebody tell me the difference other than Columbia is about twice the size of Manhattan and has a few more folks in the "middle of nowhere" counties adjacent?

Stillwater, OK is about 75 miles from either Tulsa or OKC, neither is a major metro & both stretches are more bare than the drive from Manhattan to KC.  Is that "middle of nowhere"?

Manhattan is an easy drive from KC . . . the "it's out in the middle of nowhere" types are used to 200 mile drives in the East Coast megaloplis (face it, Boston to Norfolk . . . and frankly down to Raleigh-Charlotte-Atlanta, is all one big city with very few stretches of real rural area in between) where traffic is a pain and you can't get anywhere.   Thus they look at a map and say "it's out in the middle of nowhere".

I can attest that Lubbock is in the middle of nowhere.  Distancing it from Amarillo is no real selling point either.  Anyone that has made the drive from OKC, through Amarillo, to Lubbock knows that it is 5 - 6 hours of borish hell.

we have a small population and mostly rural townships surrounding a great college town but certainly not a huge urban setting and thousands of small businesses and/or nationally headquartered corporations.

Cowherd was pretty much dead on....we "were" good and we had even less population than we do now.

I agree with what you guys are saying here, but..... perception is reality.  Kansas is in the middle of the county and most people perceive that Kansas is nowhere.
