[Stupid Fitz]

Anybody read/reading anything good?  I am looking for one that "you can't put down".  It has been a while.  I like real stuff mostly.  Maybe business, like Liar's Poker, When Genius failed, Freakonomics.  Thinking about stepping out, maybe Angels and Demons, I heard that one is going to be big.  Prob should stick with Nonfiction though, but am willing to try something.

I had trouble putting this one down.  I love road trips and this one had that Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations feel.

don't really read a lot of books. only really like easy reading stuff and usually only get a book if i'm flying somewhere and need to occupy a couple of hours. might get made fun of here, but i do like these people's stuff.

malcolm gladwell, david sedaris, nick hornby

Read some Kafka.  Short stories but you get tons of credit for them and you can re-read them and still be entertained.  They will prolly freak you out tho.

Battle Cry of Freedom.  Never read it when it was a textbook in class years ago (Its 900 pages for a summer class!).  Still in pristine condition.  Thought I might actually read it.

If you enjoy history at all, Laurence Rees has some good books on WW2:

War of the Century:  When Hitler Fought Stalin
Horror in the East:  Japan and the Atrocities of World War II

Absolutely could not put those two books down. 

Another good read is "Machete Season: The Killers in Rwanda Speak"  An account of the Rwandan Genocide by the author Hatzfeld. She is a journalist. This book looks at the killers themselves, and features testimonies of ten men, now in prison, with the attempt to understand their state of mind, and the forces behind the atrocities.

Yeah, if you've seen the movie, you've seen a bad piece of cinema.  And they get progressively worse, with the 3rd being real bad.

Like most books to movies, the books are a heck of a lot better.  Quite amazing, actually.

Yeah I prefer listening to books if I can get them in that version at the library.  Definitely check out the Outliers on CD. 

Another couple of other good pop econ books are The Great Inflation by Bob Samuelson and Supercapitalism by Robert Reich.

Some people are auditory learners.  Some are visual.

That and if you have a long time to drive, audio books are a good way to pass the time.

In Harm's Way....detailed account of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis (for those that don't know....the battleship that was sunk during WWII....the one that carried one of the atom bombs that was dropped on Japan....also the one where hundreds of the sailors spent about 6 or so days floating on the ocean after the ship was sunk...many eaten by sharks)....very good book.

Have you gotten that one read all the way through, yet?  I've got it on my shelf, but I'm still reading Liberty and Tyranny.  I probably will read something a little on the lighter side next, rather than dive into another book that will reiterate how screwed up this country is becoming.

Decided on "In the Presidents Secret Service".  About some dude that talked to over 100 or so secret service dudes and wrote a book about it.  Don't really know why, Amazon said I would like it.  Also, picked up Becks, Common Sense.  Think he is a doucher, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about.  Probably won't read that one anytime soon, it was cheap and I needed to get above $25 for free shipping.

Decided on "In the Presidents Secret Service".  About some dude that talked to over 100 or so secret service dudes and wrote a book about it.  Don't really know why, Amazon said I would like it.  Also, picked up Becks, Common Sense.  Think he is a doucher, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about.  Probably won't read that one anytime soon, it was cheap and I needed to get above $25 for free shipping.   

Read the second part or Common Sense.  That is the original by Thomas Paine.  Then read the first part.  Just because you don't like him, doesn't mean there aren't some tremendously valid points within.

Didn't say there won't be valid points.  Would even venture to guess that I would agree with him on some of them, especially some of his fiscally conservative views.  Just think he is a doucher.
