I don't think he will be that mediocre, all I am hoping for at this point is he doesn't turn into a bust which very well could happen...

He plays well for one year and he gets this huge contract?  How about give him at least one more year to prove he's for real.  There's been a hole lot of good seasons by bad/average QB's.  This contract worries me.
I'd much rather have a 69 year old coach than one that weighs 400+ pounds.

Nah, if he did, he'd get a multi-million dollar payout after he left the team.

Ron Princess =  :banghead:

    This ZERO is my Hero
This is a cheaper alternative to drafting a QB, which is what a lot of people thought they should do.  Plus, Cassel has at least proven he can play at this level to some extent, rather than drafting a QB who may be the second coming of Ryan Leaf. The contract is front loaded so if he does bomb, by year 3 you go out and draft(or sign some other recent flash in the pan backup QB which is the Chief Way) a QB and cut Cassel cause you aren't paying him much of anything those last 3 years..  Yea, its a steep price tag for a still unknown, but it was the right move for the time.  Lastly Pioli knows this kid, so if he is sold than that matters more right now than what anyone else thinks.

Couple things.
1st.  Thigpen is better than Cassel.
2nd.  You Chiefs fans are worse than Obamanites with your blind trust.  I mean if Peterson did the same thing you all would be crying and whining and referencing the Larry Johnson debacle.  Pioli has done nothing special, you guys go 2-14, you get a new qb that at best is slightly better than the one you had last year, get a couple over-the-hill linebackers, and new head coach who hasn't ever been a head coach before. . .

Look, Pioli hasn't done anything yet to get upset over.  What is the Chiefs record under Pioli?  Right now he's got a free pass until he proves otherwise.  Pioli has been on the job for what 4 months?  I am willing to cut him so slack, his track record before coming to the Chiefs warrant that.  Sure he could turn out to be just another ex-patriot failure, like several others before him, but I am willing to give him a couple weeks before I start calling for his head.
Peterson was destroying the Chiefs methodically over the course of the last 10 years.  He made bone head move after bone head move, and it proved costly.
Thigpen is no more better or proven than Cassel is, they had to install what was almost a gimmick offense to get Thigpen to have success, and he still only won 2 games. Granted he had less talent around him, but he didn't make plays to win games win needed. I didn't see Thigpen do anything last year that made me say, 'yeah, he is our future.' Sure he looked good from time to time, but he also didn't look so good at times.

Lastly, I love how you ignored the rest of the post and just commented on the stupid last sentence that I just threw out there.  Go back to worrying about your own deteriorating franchise and quit acting like the rest of the arrogant donkey fans who think they know everything.

You're either high or didn't watch either of them last year.

Both?

No, I watched them both, I live in KC so all my friends like them, and I have the Sunday Ticket and Randy Moss on my fantasy team last year so I watched most of the patriots stuff.  I also watched as Matt Cassel consistently missed Randy Moss for EASY (EASY) touchdowns.  Moss would have them beat deep by about 8-10 yards and he'd rarely be able to get him the ball.  I can only imagine how bad his deep ball will be when he doesn't have a Randy Moss giving him a 10 yard cushion to not throw picks.  Cassel was the most sacked QB last year.  Can you say Drew Bledsoe 2.0?  Get rid of the ball, he held on to it like a fat guy and the last drumstick.  He's going to have even less time this year than he did last year with the Chief's O-line being as bad as they are.  Cassel may be slightly better than Thigpen (unknown at this time), but you guys should be spending that money on other aspects, like being the team with the least amount of sacks out of any team ever.  Maybe instead of taking away your best pass-catchers, possibly get some better ones.

And I don't think I know everything, but I do know that if I was the GM of the Broncos, we'd be 10x better than we are now.  (Trading Cutler.  Possibly Marshall?  FML).

Yea I saw Cassel miss Moss on a lot of deep balls earlier on more so than later in the year, but he progressed a fair amount as well.

As far as the Thigpen vs. Cassel argument goes, just consider the road they took to get to where they are.  Sure Thigpen played at Coastal Carolina, but you don't think Cassel could have started there?  What about Thigpen's chances at even being anything than a scout teamer at USC?
Then move on to the NFL.  Cassel has spent the last 4 years learning the NFL game in New England and learning from Tom Brady.  While Thigpen has two years in KC, learning under the wise tutelage of Dick Curl, Herm Edwards, Damon Huard, and Brody Croyle.

I think Thigpen could be a very good backup QB, but I don't see him being a solid starter ever.  Cassel has that upside to him.  Is it a risk signing him? Of course, but KC needed a QB and this was as a good if not better option than drafting the unknown.

But you are right that KC has many other needs to address as well, considering how they acquired Cassel and Vrabel, this was a deal to take. The LB core patch work job might hold for a season or two at the most while they continue to procure new players to take over those spots.
