LucasArts Continues Initiative to Revive Classic Gaming Titles

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — July 6, 2009 — Fans have asked and LucasArts has delivered! Today the company announced a new initiative in its effort to revive its classic and beloved franchises by making its games available for the first time ever as digital downloads online.

In this first round of releases, ten fan-favorite LucasArts PC games will be made available Wednesday, July 8 on Steam®, Valve Corporation's delivery and management platform for the PC. Scheduled for release are classic adventure titles like LOOM™ and The Dig® and hit action games including Star Wars Battlefront® II and Star Wars Republic Commando®.

The complete list of games to be released on July 8 via Steam includes:

Armed and Dangerous™
Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
LOOM™
Star Wars Battlefront® II
Star Wars Republic Commando®
Star Wars Starfighter™
The Dig®
Thrillville®: Off the Rails™

"This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts' classic games," said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. "It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they've disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can't wait to share what's coming next. This is just the beginning."

This series of launches continues LucasArts' new mission to revitalize its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises.

LucasArts previously announced the return of the classic Monkey Island® franchise with two new projects due to be released in the near future. Tomorrow, July 7, Telltale will premiere the Tales of Monkey Island™ game series, delivering a completely new epic storyline and swashbuckling flair that will unfold across five monthly episodes on PC and WiiWare™.

The Monkey Island celebration continues on July 15 when LucasArts publishes The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition, a completely re-imagined version of the first game in the series that adds updated high definition graphics, a re-mastered musical score, and full voiceover to the classic adventure game originally launched in 1990. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will be made available on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PC via Steam and other online distribution channels.

Future announcements about the re-release of LucasArts' back catalog titles will be made through LucasArts' Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/lucasartsgames.

how are those civilization games? i bought bio shock back in the day for fifty. great game, kind of worth it.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

really, really good.  Easy way to piss away a day.  I've played Civ 1 through 4...never disappointed except for the off-brand "call to power" crap.  Haven't played CivCity or Colonization yet (cept the original colonization).

I've probably wasted far more days on Civ I-III  than I have message boarding.  Amazingly classic games.  Decided not to move onto 4 so as to limit time wasting.  That off brand Civ was crap.  Played it once on normal, once on the alien one, and gave it up before playing the middle earth one.

Wondering if Colonization is better this go round.  Just kind of got monotonous with trading ad nauseum until you built up a bigger army and navy than the Euros.

I was never patient enough to play the Civilization games.  Always ended up using cheat codes to create an army of wolves and ravage the countryside.

Love the Civ series and Bioshock. I'd definitely pick this up if I hadn't owned both already.

I remember a night in college in which I was playing the original Civ.  Eight hours later, I looked out the window and there was morning sunlight peeping through.  I don't know if you can do it on the newer versions, but on Civ 2, you could edit the attributes of units by editing a text file.  You could make any unit a paradropping unit, etc.

Always turn off the stupid space ships and just kick some tail.

I was glad when they switched it up to a 3-hit battle, rather than a 1 shot battle.  It eliminated the chance of a trireme getting a lucky shot on a battleship and sinking it.

Hate the fact that all religions are equal in 4.  Islam should allow Suicide Bomber production.  Catholicism should add a drunken factor and reduce unit effectiveness.  Christianity should allow construction of the Abortion Clinic.  Judaism should double the effectiveness of banks.  Hindu should allow the construction of McDonald's.

I remember spending many a day playing Civ2.  Absolutely great game.  Haven't played any of the Civilizations since then, but only because I'm afraid of getting a game that will consume my life.  (I'm very easily addicted to good games and tend to ignore important things when I get into them.)

I picked up this lot of games for 55 bucks.  I hadn't purchased hardly any of the games previously and have played many, many, many hours of Civ I - IV.

I have played CivCity and Colonization as well, they are average at best.  Colonization annoys me with the fact that you can't just get any specialist, like woodcutter, thus slowing the game way down to the point that it takes 30 turns to build anything.  Then you are way behind of course.  Unless one of the 'native' tribes will train you in this skill, you are playing roulette with Europe and can't do anything about it.

CivCity tried to be the Ceasar series of games and it only comes off so-so.  It isn't bad to play through once or twice, but it ends up being a game where you are cramped in my mountains and can't build everything you want.  This is the only challenge to the game really.  Build in a form where you maximize your settlers/housing w/ surrounding buildings, then you win.  What you end up doing is bulldozing the middle of town, plopping all your large buildings like church and bathworks and rebuilding all the huts around them.  Meh.  I'll still play again though, since I'm a huge sucker for rts/micro management games

M.U.L.E.

Many on here must not have played it or else they would understand market economics.

I'm nearing the end of my (approximately) 100th game of Civ 4.  Each game last nearly eight hours.

I have never, ever, ever played another game that has the same kind of replayability (is that a word?).  It is so addictive that I can't count how many times I've wasted a winter evening just playing half a game.

Yeah i'm sure M.U.L.E accurately portrays it.  I think the world should turn to that game to solve it's economic problems.

Now that is impressive.

It's by-far one of the best games ever made.

No, it's sad.  I readily admit that.  However, I bought the game the day it came out, so I've had it for like four years or so.  I usually play a couple of games a month, so over time, it comes out to be nearly a hundred games.  It's the only game I've played on a regular basis since my PS2 broke a few years back.

My wife always threatens to steal it and toss it one of these days, but she never makes good on the threat.

But it uses basic economic principles.  Supply and demand, etc.  Sometimes economies really are that simple..

Agreed on the greatness of the Civ games.  Also, agreed on the black-hole/time-sucking quality.  Hours pass and you don't even realize it.

It's even worse if you don't select the option to pause at the end of each turn.

How many times have you said, "ok, just one more turn."  Then a war breaks out and you start scrambling all your guys...all the sudden, you realize it's been 15 more turns and you are hauling your junk up on someone's town.  LOL

Agreed.  An alarm just becomes another target for those tanks.
