sys, Rusty, waks, (high BBIQ'ers).... what's the story on Tony Mitchell?  I was just glancing at the new Rivals 150 for '10, and I'm a bit surprised that a 6'8 220 SF with offers to K-State, Marquette, Oklahoma St, Arizona St, Florida St, etc, isn't on the list.  Also noticed that he plays for the Brandon Bass Elite, so he has to be good.  Is Mitchell just under the radar, or are there concerns about his game?

Based on what I have seen (not a lot).  Not very atheletic.  Raw.  Don't think he can shoot.  Good handles for his size, but not enough to make him top 100 material.  Meyer said he was "in the discussion" for top 150.  IMO, Spradling is a much more skilled and polished recruit.  W/ equal atheleticsm.

Spradling reminds me of Tyrel Reed, based on his skill set, and the fact he's a white kid from Kansas.  Reed was throwing down some nasty dunks off the backboard during Late Night, FWIW.  The kid's deceptively athletic.

"nasty dunks during Late Night" does not make Tyrel Reed in any way athletic.  The dude is a complete waste.

You've got to be athletic to play D-1 basketball.  Relative to the other athletes on the floor, Reed's garbage.  Still, having the ability to throw a basketball off of the backboard and dunk it requires some serious athleticism.  Reed also won the 3A Kansas state championship his senior year with a 22-05.25 long jump.  Also finished second in the 400m.

If were comparing big 12 white guys, Aaron Bruce would be a better Spradling comparo.

Why do you think he is not athletic?  I agree with raw but he sure looks pretty athletic to me. It is hard to evaluate somebody with a 2 minute clip, but he looks like a top 100 player to me.

he does nothing in that clip to suggest he's athletic (note to bmw, when people on big 12 bball boards discuss if a given person is athletic it can be assume that the reference point is other big 12 bball players of about the same size).  i'd love to send someone to beat the crap out of whoever convinced the gpc retard set that mitchell is some sort of super athlete.

he has cartier martin/josh carter upside, but he is well behind where martin was as a recruit skillswise.  i never heard of or saw carter as a recruit, but i'd guess he's roughly equivalent.

he needs to prove he can shoot.

Yeah, after his FR year when Drew started surrounding Bruce with talent I thought the guy would be incredible.  He was literally all Baylor had and he still found ways to score when Baylor was aweful.  I don't know if he didn't handle being surrounded by talent or if Bruce just didn't handle him.

It was Jerry Meyer that initially set everyone off by saying that he was in contention to be a big time player.

I think he has a combination of skills that make him a very interesting prospect.  However, he's the kind of kid that's going to blow up in the AAU circuit and jump up in the rankings, or he's going to be a kid we hope ends up being better than projected.

The fact that he has offers from good programs makes me feel optimistic.  The fact that he plays for Bass Elite makes me feel optimistic as well.  However, hopefully, we hear some glowing things about him after Bass makes its rounds this summer.

lol, no it wasn't.  the most optimistic thing meyer has ever said w. re. to mitchell was that he had heard from justin young that he was a possible 75-175 type.

However, he's the kind of kid that's going to blow up in the AAU circuit and jump up in the rankings.

he's already been on the aau circuit and hasn't blown up.  i don't dislike him as a recruit, just the unfounded idiocy that gpc dishes out anytime his name comes up.

Average Big 12 athelete.  When you are as raw as Mitchell apears, you better have NBA upside to be top 100.  Compare to a McGruder vid.  McGruder is boarderline top 100.  Watch some old Witherspoon vids.  They are cut out of the same mold in terms of body and style, but 'Spoon looked way better at the same age.  Of course I've only seen a couple of highlight vids, and could change my mind if I saw something new that impressed me.  I think Mitchell would get absolutely destroyed if he were to play in the big 12 next year.  Sutton would completely demoralize him in practice.  Spradling, on the other hand, looks like he could give meaningful minutes with a few months practice.

I said Reed was "deceptively" athletic.  I never said he was Dwight Howard.  There are plenty of players in the Big 12 who couldn't throw a ball off the backboard and dunk it.

You are absolutely right.  I went back and looked at old PM's on the subject, and no one verified who the analyst actually was.  I asked, but was never responded to.

My bad.

As far as the AAU circuit is concerned, you're right.  The odds of him blowing up are probably small.  However, I didn't say he will, but I did say that the kid will either blow up and make Frank look like a genius, or he'll end up looking like a project.  What I was trying to say is that there isn't much of a middle ground with this kid.

I will agree that he doesn't look as athletic as 'advertised', but he is 'long', and he seems to run the floor well.  That will get you a spot on Frank's team.

Don't understand the TMitchell complaints right now. He is a 6'7" guy who can run the floor, with average handles/athleticism/shooting ability. Isn't that a great player to have on your team a few years down the road? By the time the kid is a junior he could be a really good ball player.  There are only a handful of guys in the nation that will make an imediate big time impact and they are the 5 star players.  Sutton is still coming around and is now going into his 3rd year.

It's the way K-State has to recruit.  Get good players in EVERY class so that we don't have to rely on a guy like TMitchell or a McGruder to contribute right away.  All good teams rely on players other than freshmen.  Even teams with fab freshmen that succeed in the tourney have older experienced players (Kevin Love and UCLA).  Xavier is a perfect example of the type of recruiting K-State can and should do in order to have great teams, and Frank is doing just that.  Burrell was a 2 star and Brown was a 3 star and those guys led X to the elite 8 when they developed.

You are contradicting yourself. Cartier was rated 50ish and you are downplaying Mitchell, yet saying you think Mitchell could be roughly equivalent to Cartier but are also suggesting Mitchell could not be around the 100 range.

I agree that Cartier was probably ahead skillwise if that is a code word for shooting. Looking at that clip, though (which, admittedly is a very small sample size), it appears Mitchell runs better, jumps better and handles the ball better than Martin.

I think what sys was trying to say is that Cartier and Mitchell were very similar athletes.  However, Cartier had a shot.  Now take the shot away from him and you have Mitchell.  Do you think Cartier would have been top 100 w/o his shot?
