    The "other" KSU
OK, aside from Venables - who else would have been a good fit here? There is basically nothing really happening in KSU sports - so we might as well speculate in hindsight (which as we all know is 20/20).

opinions - thoughts - ventings

At least 5 other coordinators at good D1 programs.

Plenty of other coaches, but how many would have actually come here?

I really wanted Patterson.  Oh well.

I think Steve Kragthorpe at Tulsa may have also been mentioned at the time, but that probably wouldn't have worked out any better than Prince.  Turner Gill, Chuck Long and Gene Chizik were there for the taking, but those aren't really great hires, either.  Dennis Erickson?  A nice score would've been Brian Kelly from CMU, but who knew he was so good at the time?

Brooks Barta was my first choice. He would've been a good "fit" for KSU.

he understands the ksu culture.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I thought iowa state made a home run hire when they got him and was actually jealous that we didn't, I guess that turned out for the better?? But apparently auburn still thought he was good

I was hoping to offer one of the traditional powerhouse programs OC/DC - it's tough, in all honesty I thought Venables would have been the obvious choice. I still like VK as HCIW.

No BCS  experience as a head coach (or even as a coordinator) and only 3 years head coaching experience in all..  He's an intriguing thought, but a more likely one down the road a bit.  It's not like we're the only team that passed on him...

and i think the auburn one was more of the...issues with him and his wife.

the fact is, is he took a school that was more inept then KSU and did something with them.

At a very low level  D1 school.  I'm not saying he isn't a good coach and wouldn't have been a good hire, but you asked why he wouldn't be a great hire and I gave some of the reasons.  And lots of D1 schools had openings this past year (not just us and Auburn) and nobody hired him.  Don't act like we were the only ones to pass.  If he was such a great hire, why didn't big red bring back one of their favorite sons?

Good MF point re: NUBB

I think I would have taken Turner Gill over Prince without question.

Lou!  So glad your back on the KSU boards!
Are you going to deliver a pre-season inspirational talk to Coach Snyder, from one OB to another? :kstatriot:

Gary Patterson.  Gary Barnett.  Terry Bowden.

Please God, no.  Don't ever hire Gary Barnett.

I love Gary Patterson as a head coach.  When the whole "It's Patterson" thing broke, (before it turned out to be complete BS) I was freaking stoked.  I texted all my EMAW friends.  You would have been hard pressed to find someone more excited than me.  Then the bubble burst.  Sadface.

I'm still hoping for Patterson to come here in 5 years when Snyder burns out.  Wishful thinking?  You betcha.
I'd much rather have a 69 year old coach than one that weighs 400+ pounds.

Knowing what I know now, hell yes I would.  But, at that time, I would have felt more comfortable turning the team over to a (moderately) successful coordinator from a BCS team.  Plus, at that point, Turner hadn't even been a head coach at any level.  I'm not sure if the big 12 is the best place to learn.

Brian Kelly

True, he went from a low level coach to a very successful BCS coach and did it immediately.  BUT, he had been a head coach for 15 years before taking over at Cincinnati.
