Summary:
  • 4 year old laptop.  Starting to slow down considerably in the last few months.
  • 14.7 GB remaining of 80.0 GB available.
  • Roughly 18.0 GB of Video.
  • Roughly 11.8 GB of Music.
  • Looking to upgrade in May-ish 2010.

My objective
  • Find cheap* external USB HD that can hold my music/videos.
  • Ideally will allow all my music/videos/other important files to easily transfer once new lappy is purchased in a year.
  • Hopefully, it speeds up my currently lappy now.

*really don't want to spend a whole lot.  Just looking to do the bare minimum.

A lappy usually costs about $20. Depends on the skankness of the  :swinglegs:  , though.

If it took you four years to fill up that little of a hard drive you may as well just buy a couple of 16gb flash drives.

I feel like with electronics especially you get what you pay for.  If you want a crapty XHD don't be surprised when you start having problems with it.  Instead, my advice is to buy a nice XHD for your music and videos.  Besides, you should be backing up all your crap anyway, not just when you're running out of room on your computer.

I like flash drives, but their way too easy to misplace. Lost one right before I finished a 300 page policy manual. I said frack it after that.

Don't think it will speed up your laptop at all.  Also, will prolly slow it down if you are trying to access music or video off the external.

Actually, it's pretty common to have a performance drop off once your free disk space is less than 25% of it's full capacity.  This is especially true if you never defrag.

First off, why don't you upgrade your internal laptop harddrive?

Second, will your external hard drive stay in one place or move? If it will move, get a 2.5" laptop hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+1035507776&Configurator=&Subcategory=380&description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc= and an external enclosure  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392019 Just get 7200 RPM.

Probably move it some, mostly want it for the speed/performance first, then use on multiple computers second.

Is this hard to do on your own?

Physically installing it is very simple to do. Just get a 2.5" hard drive and see if yours supports SATA or IDE (should be in your manual or an online manual). You just need to back up your information somehow and reformat the new hard drive with Windows.

I just bought a 750GB and two 1TB units by Western Digital at Best Buy. Bought the 750 for I think $115 and then the 1TB mods showed up for the same price, which was a screaming deal. Very simple and I love it. Copied approx. 95,000 songs to each with no problemos.

*and you mentioned you just wanted to do the bare minimum... I would find the best deal you can ($/storage) that you can get and go with it. Yeah, maybe you'll be able to buy 2TB for the same price as 1TB within 3 yrs, but just go for the gold now.

And some advice, don't get computer components from Best Buy. Complete ripoff. Get the hard drive and enclosure separately from Newegg.com.

Yeah I just bought some stuff from newegg. But I don't buy stuff to put it together. I buy it complete because I don't know anything about building electronic crap.

It's really easy actually. Unscrew the case and set the drive in.

probably so but I don't do that stuff. I don't know how computers work nor do I want to know how they work. Would reduce my quality of life.

Knowing how computers work got me a raise at two jobs. Not quite a reduction in quality of life.
