don't understand the fascination with touch phones.  Hate them

Guess it depends on what you like.

I would never go back to some non-touch phone now.

And I want to see what's so special about this Pre thingy.  Don't get me wrong, looks like a nice phone, but pretty much like most other good touches.  And I don't get why you would do a slide down querty that's small like that when its just as easy and better (IMHO) to have an easier to use querty slide out on the side like on my Touch Pro.  I suppose I'll just have to see one.  I suppose I've always been sort of anti-palm as well. Had one when they first came out and the os was crappy IMO.  Went to a IPAQ and have liked the Windows Mobile system ever since.

What's the big deal with the Pre? The phone itself doesn't look that great. The OS should have came out 5 years ago. I'm just not a Palm guy.
at a high level, you can basically take the iphone and add in the ability to multitask by running multiple apps at one time (iphone cant), real 3G data speeds (ATT's EDGE service is garbage), a physical keyboard (iphone doesn't have one), a cranked up CPU, lower cost service plans than ATT offers, and you've got the Pre.

Palm just released the development kit to app dev guys this week at CTIA so there should be no shortage of applications when it's launched.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

actual hardware is less and less important now a days,  it's all about the software and providing the ability for the user to add any applications that they want to onto a phone so they can customize the phone to how they want to use it, AND actually have the motor under the engine to perform without hiccups, is where the market is now.

Makes sense.

How much (and how) is it better than the HTC product like the Touch or Touch Pro?

I've seen the walkthroughs of the device and OS online and it didn't really wow me. It looks like a great phone, but I'm just missing out why everyone is clamoring for it, ya know?

They are speculating $299.00 w/ 2 year agreement, and it has the ability to run multiple applications, it has an app store, which you don't get with the HTC touch phones (I don't think)

BTW, there's a Fandango app, where you can search for movietimes and buy movie tickets and it automatically puts the movie time in your calendar!  (not life changing, but pretty sweet nonetheless.

No, HTC doesn't have an App Store.  But you can find plenty of stuff for the phone out there if you look a little.  I suppose the App Stores that have most things in one place are nice, but I've found the stuff I wanted to add to my phone pretty easily.  This whole "App business" seems pretty overrated IMHO.

Kind of depends, I guess.  I have a couple friends that have the G1, and the apps on that are very nice.  Like the one where you can scan a barcode and look for the lowest local prices or national prices, or one where you can just push a button and it calls a cab service to your location using your GPS (good for drunk people who don't know where they are).  Another one turns your phone on silent when you go some places, like you can set it to put your phone on vibrate when you go to work, so you don't forget, then have your ringtone go off during a meeting or something.  There are a lot of cool ones out there.

_FAN, the Pre's keyboard is 10x better than the Touch Pro's. I carried the TP for awhile and liked it, but I've been carrying the Pre for a bit now (yeah, that's right) and there's no going back for me.

The ability to have myriad apps open at once and the way the Pre's UI handles switching between them is enough by itself to vault the Pre above other phones. But there's a lot more to it than that.

Yeah, but he asked what makes it better, and those aspects are what make it better, couldn't really answer his questions without stating the same things you did.  Also, that is not a wrong price point, at first they thought it would be 199 to better compete with the iPhone, but they are thinking about 299 w/ 2 yr. contract.  AND. . .

PALM PRE

I love how you kept hinting at this but nobody would bite.  Then, in shame, you just had to announce it because you couldn't help yourself

Yes, yes it was. You also don't have to make 10 click attempts on a link before it registers on the Pre like you had to with the 'Stinct. Its touch UI is pretty accurate.
