What's the difference between a comic book and a "graphic novel"?

I always assumed that "graphic novels" were longer, but I dunno.

Wasn't familiar with Watchmen before I saw the movie, but I caught on pretty quickly and enjoyed it.  It's a fun action/mystery type movie...nothing more, nothing less.

Graphic Novels can be longer, similar to a true "novel" or a collection of comic issues presented in one long format.

Lots of movies have been inspired by them. V for Vendetta, Road to Perdition, Dark Knight (inspired from), 30 Days of Night, Wanted, A History of Violence, Ghost World, Constantine, etc.

Uh, Dark Knight the movie wasn't at ALL similar to the GN.

I wish I could take back the night I read both the Dark Knight and Watchmen GNs...not for me, man, not for me.

The Watchmen movie was okay I guess. Entertaining, stylish. If you go to the IMAX version, though, be prepared to get assaulted by noise. To a painful point.

road to perdition?  I can totally see that now.  30 days of night could have been so much better.

gosp- I loved the Road to Perdition film so I picked up the GN. It was one of the few that I have read. I liked the movie better. I've never seen 30 Days of Night.

I hate overly loud crap, but I was thinking of going to the watchmen Imax.  Maybe I should just go to the regular version since I think the regular AMC already has the best sound I've ever heard in a theater.

Which is the one where and old ballz Bruce Wayne beats up Superman and then fakes his own death at the end?

Horrible.

Dark Knight Returns, I believe? The Killing Joke supposedly inspired Dark Knight.
