You can't be racist and like basketball.
are you scared? you know, living so far away from ks/parents, etc..

no.  I don't really have any friends here (it's really hard), but mrs. rusty and the offspring make it OK.  It's really kind of fun to be completely detached.

Only problem is the cost/vacation of travel to see family/friends/etc.

I'm in the same boat. Driving 9 hours kinda sucks, but I love not seeing my parents whenever they feel like it.

yeah, we're about 11 hours to KC, 15 hours to most of my family.  at least you can do 9 hours in a three-day weekend without wanting to die the first day back to work.

any good ethnic restaurants

Not within 20 miles.  It's a really white place.

There's some OK Thai food that I've had once you get into Grand Rapids, though.

is there a college close? if so then could always put an add for nanny or something like that on the job board or the newspaper (sounds much more professional than babysitter). you're going to want one come winter i bet w/ no family close by and all.

Do they play the "I'm Jeff Daniels, move your company to Michigan because we suck and will totally worship you if you do" commercials in MI too or just all other states?

LMAO, yes!  But I think it's a local version - I didn't realize those were everywhere.  He actually has been doing benefit concerts all over the state (and did one a couple blocks from my house).  Very Michigany.

It also sucks that so many of your "vacations" are actually just trips back home. People are always having babies and getting married and celebrating Christmas and I'm like "goddammit I want to go to Jamaica".

Exactly.  All of my vacation days this year have already been used on graduations and weddings.

The upside is that I can make easy day-trips or weekend trips to Chicago.

LOL

I have totally done this with the museums. Told everybody that streets were closed and nearby metro stops shut down because of security threats and was all "no biggie. happens all the time here in the District."

Now, I always just take them to my favorite restaurants and make up historical facts about it so they think its sufficiently touristy. "This Five Guys was actually built on the same site as one of the cities most notorious brothels" and crap like that.
