PrintKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Michael Watson and Mike English each scored 18 points as Missouri-Kansas City shocked Kansas State 93-52 Tuesday night.
It was the first UMKC victory over Kansas State in 15 tries in a series that began in 1987.
Kansas State, which had won seven of its first eight games for its best start since 1997, looked sluggish after an eight-day holiday break, shooting only 35.7 percent from the field and committing 18 turnovers.
UMKC (4-6), which snapped a three-game losing skid, had six players finish in double figures. Brandon Lipsey had 14 points, Javon Clark came off the bench to score 11, and Carlton Aaron and Brandon Temple each had 10.
Kansas State, which entered the game averaging 75.1 points, was led by Tim Ellis’ 16 points and 11 from Cartier Martin.
The UMKC victory was its first over a Big 12 opponent since Dec. 8, 2000, when it won 82-71 at Nebraska. The Kangaroos won only for their 10th time in 56 games against schools in the Big 12.
UMKC jumped out to a 14-4 lead and never trailed, holding a commanding 40-22 advantage at halftime.
The Kangaroos opened the second half by outscoring the Wildcats 10-2 in the first three minutes to increase their advantage to 50-24.
Lipsey, who entered the game averaging 9.8 points, scored 10 of the Kangaroos’ first 19 points. Watson, who averaged 25.5 points as a junior to rank fourth in NCAA Division I, had only one point in the first 12 minutes before finishing the half with 11.
Kansas State, meanwhile, missed 15-of-26 first-half shots, including all six 3-point attempts. The Wildcats also committed 10 first-half turnovers to only two for the Kangaroos.
Kansas State has lost 10 consecutive road games since a Dec. 14, 2002, victory at Wichita State. It was only the third time in 25 games the Wildcats have been beaten by a Mid-Continent Conference team.
