for designing..yes...but for messageboard surfing, writing papers, etc the trackpad on my Macbook is the shizznit.

if you're using an adobe program, autocad, etc. yes they will suck.

I couldn't fathom using a touchpad for any of that. I'd kill myself before that happened.

used one most of yesterday to try it out.  Was garbage.  That was the reason I started this thread.
