Allright boys, I know none of you were waiting for this but I'm going to give my review of Meier's play and what I took from this game. The first thing that should be noted is that our offensive line did a much better job this week. I know that this was a lesser opponent than last week's but tonight they looked like they knew what they were doing. They weren't perfect but they were much improved.
Now for the Meier rant... after watching this game I've realized a couple of thing:
1. Dylan Meier's not that good and he's not that bad, he's just a mediocre quarterback playing for a mediocre (but improving) team, in a mediocre division of a pretty strong conference.
2. Josh Freeman is not ready to play QB at the Division I level period. It didn't help that he was running with the #2 offensive line but he simply didn't looked like a sure-fired "great" quarterback. I don't think it would be wise to throw him out there right now as a starter and I can absolutely see what Prince is doing by going with Meier and giving Freeman time to learn. In my opinion, in the case of Meier vs. Freeman, Dylan is simply the lesser of two evils. But, I digress and talking about Freeman is another rant for another day.
So here's the thing about Meier boys and girl (Goldie), he does a great job of managing the clock, reading defenses, knowing the right check-offs, and throwing the the slant. He cannot however, throw the 10 yard out or hit someone going down the field who's wide open. I'm not being critical here its just that as far back as I can remember I do not recall him having the arm strength to make the 10-20 yard out throw and things simply have not changed. The throw that he made for the touchdown in the second half to (Martinez or Gonzalez) on the slant for the touchtown was absolutely brilliant and a difficult throw that that. He threw it between a lineback and safety with a cornerback in pursuit, then he goes and overthrows Figurs (not sure if it was him) by a good 10 yards once he had broken away from everybody and had nothing but 6 in front of him.
So there you have it, Meier is mediocre and Freeman isn't ready. We'll win games this year but it won't be because of great quarterback play, we'll win because of strong special teams play and strong team effort.
