I really feel like a piece of sh1t for asking this  :flush:
But I have high speed internet through AT&T and was trying to hook up a wireless router so I could use my other laptop around the house. When I hooked it up it screwed everything up and I had to reset the modem and my password, ip address, dns server and all that crap. I believe thats because AT&T doesn't want you using the one modem on more than one computer. I have no clue why its not working when I try and install the router(the modem is still working but I cant connect to the internet) any ideas oh btw I am an internet and computer idiot mostly so maybe in normal terminology.  :chirp:

Thanks for anyone that has ideas any complainers gtfo my thread only time I'll go way OT I promise. :fiesta:

Replace the combustion engine in your capacitor and you should be fine.

Just kidding.  I have AT&T too.  Get this - the modem ALREADY has wireless internet.  Call the AT&T d00dz and get the name and password.

Yes.

That's why your wireless router won't work actually.  The AT&T modem is a router, and you can't easily plug a router into another router!

    Wait...what?
What brand is the modem?  What brand is the router?

Turn the wireless on your laptop on, search for local wireless networks, and see if there are any at full strength that could be your network.  Most of the AT&T wireless networks have similar default names, but I don't remember what they are right now.  If your modem is already wireless, then there may be a "key" (long number) on  a label on the bottom for you to enter to connect to the wireless network.

I'm not sure if there's any difference with the U-Verse internet, but at least with AT&T's old DSL you usually needed to configure your wireless router to supply the modem with the username and password for your DSL.  See, when it's hooked directly to your computer you do that through the AT&T DSL connection utility, but when it's hooked to the router, you have to configure the router to do it so that the modem will "deliver the internet" to the router, which the router then distributes.  Your router instructions should include a section on how to configure it for this...you'll have to get into your router's config program over the wireless network to do that.

One of the reasons I like cable internet better...internet is always being piped in w/o username or password, so you just hook up your wireless router and you're ready to go.

what is the U-verse I saw it on at&t.com is that something else I have to pay for? I just got my modem this summer so its not that old its through my at&t phone connection(local area network) and all that.

Oh and I called at&t trying to set it all up but it was no help talking to the indian lady she was no help. how did you get your user name and password she tried to tell me its just my email address and its password through at&t is that right?

and when I take my ethernet cable out should I just be able to connect? :blindfold:

You should be able to turn your new router into a switch pretty easily- what make/model did you get?  linksys wrt54g?

All you really need to do is turn off DHCP.  Perhaps some UPNP if available, depends on the model from there.
