My computer finally died and I'm thinking about replacing it with a new Imac.  Thing is- I've never used an Apple except to surf the net.  What do you think?  Not wanting to relearn everything I know about PC's but am willing to pick up a Mac For Dummies and think I could pick it up.  Go Katz.

I think they are toys.  JMO.  Trendy, underpowered, and high priced  A PC can do anything a MAC can do, but better, and cheaper.

the design of the imac is a big appeal imo, i love how there's no wires etc

related to them being underpowered, the intel CPU's they put in them handle any application you can throw at them.  i dont know, seems pretty slick.

underpowered relative to how much you spend on them, fwiw.

But yeah, if you want the "all in one" computer an iMac would be alright.

New macbooks are coming in the next couple of weeks FWIW

I can't really stand using windows anymore after being on my mac for 3 years.  Vista has finally caught up with some of the features that OSX had 4 years ago, but it's not as stable.  Plus you can boot into windows on a mac.

Really? It was the opposite for me. My PC is super slow, freezes a lot. Then, I got my macbook and have never had a single problem with it.

I've had a Mac Book Pro 15.4 for nearly two years and I've never had to have it worked on. I'm on it alot too. It gets alot of use. I upped the RAM to 2GB and it has enough power for basic design programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver...but not enough for video editing. Thinking about selling it and upgrading to the newer models that are nearly 3GHz and 4GB Ram.

    I'm with Coco.
I used a Mac for about a year and I hated it. The OS had a nice simple design to it, but that is it. It has just as many issues as Windows, so don't believe the hype. I've actually had a ton more issues with Macs than I have with Vista or XP machines.

For a power user, I can't see myself depending on OS X for my work.

having used computers since the commodore 64 days, I'm not ignorant enough to think that either one (apple or pc) offers up unlimited computing with no problems/issues.  i do think the apple os is more stable than vista and less likely to draw the attention of virus/hax0r retards, but that's not to say it won't give me problems from time to time.

apple-
i get to learn something new, love the "all in one design" of the imac with a huge 24 inch screen, known for more graphic art related crap

pc-
cheaper than apple, can build myself, wires everywhere and cluttered, big, can buy a big monitor from dell, already know how to use, vista sux

pissclams, i'm thinking of doing a BOY (build it yourself) soon, well....myself.

If you go that route, maybe start a new thread about it, and we can sit down and talk x's and o's in terms of computer parts.

I have actually found the OSX drivers to suck just as much as Windows. In my line of work, color correction (monitor and printer matching exactly) is very important. This is hard to do when Nvidia drivers are AWFUL and plotters drivers are AWFUL. Now days, Apples aren't the best for graphics. It's not 1990 anymore. Also, OSX has the issue of the entire OS crashing when a program or driver crashes. Vista is one of the better OS's in being able to close out a program or a driver and retain the stability of the OS. My Vista laptop at home hasn't restarted in about a month, because it's just as stable as a fresh restart.

What will you be using this computer for?

I've had zero issues with any PC I've ever owned.  75 years and 347 PCs and absolutely no probs.  Each has also included hidden compartments full of gold nuggets and jewels.  I've owned 46 apple computers and each have been completely buggy and faulty to the point of un-useability.  Also, each apple had a live cocked-and-loaded skunk living inside ready to spray me in the face the first time I started them up.  Just fyi d00ds.

bahamas. got back monday morn.

apples arent meant for typing resumes. PC's are. the more simple the better.

if you want photoshop, final cut and vegas to run smoothly together, the apple is made for that.

Apples aren't without problems.  My Macbook has been somewhat less durable than the iBook I had before.  They are notorious for palmrest cracking and screen flicker, and mine has both issues.  It's right at 2 years old now.  Also I had to buy a new battery for about $100, but OTOH it never leaves my side.  I live on it and never use my PC unless I have to print something.  I work quite a bit with Unix, though, so there's no comparison when it comes to ease of use with a mac vs. pc in this environment.  It all depends on what programs you like/need.  Macs are pretty bad for gaming, but if you just spend all day on the web like me they're great.  Also it takes about 10 seconds to boot up, although I usually just leave it in sleep mode.  I literally go months without rebooting unless there's a software update or I need to use windows for something.  I've just never found a PC that has the same feel when it comes to the trackpad and keyboard.

i understand whats going on.

a few things we should all be aware of.

they make games for macs. but macs arent really into gaming. any computer is going to do good on the web. its searching and browsing for christs sake.

stick with what PC's and MAC's are made for.

it all depends on what you do.

I stole Bookcat's iMac. Works pretty well for me. Conversion was easy with "missing manuals" book. Much better than Dummies series.
Downside=lots of programs I can't run on Mac that I could on PC. I know there are Mac equivalents for a lot, but I'm lazy. Saul is right though, lot of money for what you get.

Upside=more stable for me. Like the design.

Overall, I like both mac and pc. Pluses and drawbacks both ways.

Dumbass users can't &@#% up MAC's as much which is good.  Although don't switch from a PC to a MAC them because they will never figure it out.  For all the crap you want to do a MAC would be fine, since I assume PC does not have Final Cut or Vegas (?), but i'm sure they have programs out there that do the exact same thing as them.

I probably want to cast my vote for clams to get a mac.  I'm a big propnent of trying new things.  Broadening one's horizons, so to speak.  If clams doesn't like his new mac, he can always sell it on ebay and then find a pc that will meet his computing needs.  Also, he can look into getting an iphone.
