Here's a John Edwards quote from during the Clinton Presidency:
"I think this president has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen."

Well to be fair, I do believe there is a difference between a garden variety extra-marital fling and routinely getting hummers while on the sitting in the oval office on the telephone with heads of state.
The whole reason Clinton decided to allow disbarment was because there was evidence of affairs involving penetration with Lewinsky that were never revealed if he accepted the punishment after his term.
Infidelity, in of itself, is a problem of moral character but one I don't think is a big issue. Lying about it is much worse. When you go before the country and tell everyone you NEVER HAD SEXUAL RELATIONS with a woman, only to quibble over the meaning of the word "is", shows his character was in question.
He'd have been better off just going up and saying "Look, I did this. I'm not proud, but I did it." and that would have stopped everything. Sure, it would have been painful for his family, but a lot of wasted time and resources in special investigations could have been avoided.
