The K-State mentality is a curious thing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apparently, geography is everything:  http://blogs.cjonline.com/index.php?entry=7610

The second half of the opinion piece justifies K-State's new recruiting prowess by focusing on being able to land Curtis Kelly, the guy who failed at UConn and nobody else wanted.  Granted, he gave token comment to the fact that his recruitment wasn't a fierce battle, but the overriding theme of the story is pretty funny considering the talent level next year might be on par with a few of Wooly's teams. The best quotes:

"Still, it says something significant when K-State can go into New York and land a player like Kelly, a five-star prospect coming out of Rice High."

and

"Even if Kelly doesn't pan out at K-State, his signing indicates Martin and his staff are developing connections beyond the DC Assault organization. It indicates K-State now has the clout to pursue good players, wherever they might be found."

They're delusional if they don't see what martin/hill are building.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Other than completely whiffing on all their top targets for the '08 recruiting class, K-State is the only program in the North that is recruiting at a high level.  Curtis Kelly is a guy with a lot of potential, but he just hasn't done much at the college level.  I think that's the only criticism.  Your '09 class could be amazing though, especially if you guys get Lat-Will and Boyd.

Same can be said for Cole, his stats were terrible.  3 pts/g, 2 rebs/g  that sends chills doesn't it.

On per minute basis, I think CK ourperformed CA.  So, ku has Aerosmith, CKelly2, and a bunch-O-4* noobz.

So how did the Greatest Recruiting Class of All Time work out?
Sorry you couldn't get past aTm in the Big XII tournament, Game three would have been sweet.

Curtis Kelly = Darnell Jackson

He'll "blossom" after a year as a redshirt....I believe we'll see improvement on par with Jackson's.

Shame on us for not beating the Big 12 preseason #3 pick in the Big 12 tournament and losing to a veteran Wisconsin team coached by a guy who has been to the final four and multiple time Big 10 champion.

Dude, quit making everything into a pissing contest.  The fact is that Kelly never reached his potential at UConn.  There's no denying it.  Aldrich played behind three NBA post players last year as a freshman and wasn't asked to put up a lot of points.  His performance against UNC was a glimpse of what he can do once he gets more minutes.

Curtis Kelly > Darnell Jackson
Powerful inside game, nice outside shot, and the grace to put it on the floor and get to the hoop.

Jackson averaged 6.3 ppg and 4.9 rpg as a sophomore.  Kelly was relegated to the bench of a mediocre UConn squad and barely averaged 2 ppg.  On top of that, Jackson was the 4th-leading scorer for the National Champs.  Seriously... you guys get more delusional with each post.  Not saying Kelly doesn't have the potential to improve and turn things around, but he's not better than Jackson at this point.

Aldrich will be pretty good imo.  Kelly hopefully can be a Diara type (pretty good imo).  Both are fine players ranked about the same out of highschool.

Kelly WILL be better than Jackson.  At the post-soph/pre-jurnior I'd say they are on par.  Kelly gets the benefit of a year to improve physically and practice with the redshirt.  PLUS, as a prep player Kelly displayed vastly more potential than Jackson.  It really isn't a stretch at all to suggest that Kelly will be better than Jackson.  Really, it would be foolish to suggest otherwise.

BUT, you'll get to see that first hand.  So why bother bickering....let's just sit back and watch what happens.  I have zero anxiety about it, and am confident that will work out in KSU's favor.  How do you feel?  Your national championship was a monumental accomplishment....something that you cherish for the rest of your life...I really wish that KSU had one.....but Frank is 1-1 versus Self and I expect that to improve in our favor over the next three years.  Serious.

Don't even get me started with your predictions.  You had Self coaching Oklahoma State not too long ago.  If Kelly even comes close to the level that Darnell Jackson played at as a senior, I'll be impressed.  Personally, I just don't see it.

Self backing into that NC is the only reason he's not coaching at OSU.

Why can't you guys give him credit for winning the title?  He's the only coach to beat two #1 seeds in the Final Four.  His team was the winningest national champ of all-time with 37 wins.  It's like you expect ku to go undefeated and beat everybody by 30 points.

Aside from that, you're f'ing insane if you think a guy would leave ku for Oklahoma State.

Everybody in the Big 12 knows that Curry hits that last shot and Self bails.  I mean, look at it from the outside.  OSU probably has a better team coming into next season than ku and he obviously would get more money.  This is all before taking into account the alma mater factor and better facilities.  There really wouldn't be anything keeping him there without a NC parade to attend, you know?

Fair enough...  keep in mind that Pete was predicting Self to bail after winning the title.  That's the part I never quite understood.  Your point that he might have left if we lost in the Elite Eight makes a lot more sense, but I think you undervalue the prestige of coaching at ku.

To get back on topic, I think ku fans are in some denial about K-State, just like K-State fans are in some denial about ku.  We see a guy like Kelly who has a lot of potential, but didn't really do much at UConn, and we automatically assume he sucks.  Kind of similar to what you guys do with guys like Aldrich.  I try to keep it objective for the most part.  Kelly seems to have a lot of potential... he should definitely benefit from a change of scenery.

Agree with most of your post.  Also, you really can't fault people for dogging on Aldrich because he's white and stupid looking.

ku won fair and square.

Now, on the Minnesotan.   Until further Notice, the UNC game was one where the ku coaching staff got him all fired up to go play . . . must wait and see that during the regular season grind before "Until further notice" gets removed.

He could put up 30 and 10 every game and would still get dogged.

Watching you guys cope with ku winning the title is hilarious. All you do is embarrass yourselves when you try to bash a coach that has won 7 Big XII titles and a national championship in 5 years at ku.

Bo Ryan took his team to the final four as an eight seed and played UNC

The fact that ku fans count regular season conference ties as winning a Big XII title is also hilarious. Do you win every tic tac toe game you play as well?
