WR: Am I missing something...?

With Val Taylor leaving, there are only six (6!) wide receivers on scholarship.  Toney Coleman, one of the six, has been reported as out for the year.  That leaves just 5 for this season...Figurs, Moreira, Nelson, Wilson and Richards.  WOW!  Doesn't something has to happen here, or can the walk-ons handle the rest of the load?  Any idea, based on practice, which of the seemingly million defensive backs currently in the program might be switching sides?  Running back isn't exactly deep...Alsup has played some WR in the past, McCardle might work.  Linebackers? 

I've seen this talk of concern over just having 2 QBs, well I'm officially a little worried about who will be catching all of those passes from Meier/Freeman...realizing of course that Prince will use the TE as a weapon...which should mean a big year for Norwood etc..

watts could play both ways.  he was a WR.  a lot of DB's could play wide out as a 6th WR.  plus the TE's.

Antonio Brown was running with the ones on Sunday. He's a smaller version of Moreira -- not top-end straight-line speed, but very sudden and quick in his cuts and stuff. He will be awarded a 'ship along with Gonzalez before the season starts. He's 1 inch shorter than Moreira, but 25 pounds lighter. Gotta question his durability at that weight.

Oh, and don't forget about The Donald. Donald Raymer, who was placed on 'ship after the spring game. He is a hybrid TE/WR who will come in on obvious passing downs and multi-receiver sets.

We still don't have many WRs, though. They brought in those walkon twins from Denver specifically to play WR on the scout team.

I really like Nelson, Figurs, Moreira, and Wilson.  Wilson has the looks to be a potential stud.  As was mentioned, Brown and Gonzales seemed to be getting quite a few reps saturday as well.  We seem to have a good mix of tall, bigger recievers with a couple smaller speed guys to work in the slot.

I assume that's tongue in cheek, but seriously this scout squad stuff is overrated.  #1, if your scout squad players were really that good, they wouldn't be on scout squad.  #2, you can insert good athletes to simulate good athletes.  Even with QB depth it wasn't uncommon during weeks that we played a team with a running QB we'd throw in a young safety or reciever to simulate that in practice anyway.  You can always bring over a guy who can throw, even JF or DM, to give the defense a look vs a passing QB. 

I will admit I didn't completely like how the AE deal went down, but in the end its not that big of a deal, and the coaches will easily figure out scout team issues with the personnel they have on hand.

Either way, that's very "at least he's doing better than Asbury"-esque.

Lets remember, before anyone else says it, that I believe nobody can do better than Tom Asbury.   

However, it should be noted Prince is currently .500 at 0-0.  Asbury was an under .500 coach at 85-88.

Prince wouldn't = Asbury.  He would = Lon Kruger or Dana Altman, depending on how you wanted to look at it.  Maybe his recruiting skills are very Lon Kruger-esque.
