the "values" themselves become largely irrelevant

Precisely what value is being espoused there? It looks to me like a propaganda piece inviting us to partake in the ridiculous belief that war is never worthwhile because someone might come home injured.
People dying because some redneck illiterate is made because his daddy failed as well...your response pretty much proves my point fwiw
This is one of the major problems with you lefties: you're so invested in your personal animus that your hatred for certain people and groups clouds your judgment. To wit: "daddy" didn't "fail", he played nice with the United Nations who neutered the US military effort following Iraq's forcible eviction from kuwait; the entire US chain of command was clamoring to finish the drive to Baghdad but the United Nations said, "No!" While "daddy" does deserve some of the blame for this "failure" he deserves it primarily for ceding control of US policy to the United Nations, always a poor choice.
W must certainly be the first "redneck illiterate" in the history of our fine nation to have matriculated with a BA from Yale and an MBA from Harvard. Odd how the left believes W to be a drooling illiterate moron while they believe Dick Cheney is a mastermind when it is W who received his undergraduate degree from Yale and Cheney who flunked out of that same institution. Odd, wouldn't you say?
As for the war itself I'll grant that its stated purpose was to relieve a third world thugocracy of its WMD. You are aware of course that this is precisely what happened ... in Libya. Literally the very day US ground troops crossed the Iraqi border Muammar Qadhafi hit the speed dial to DC and said, "I give. Come pick up all the pieces of my nuclear weapons development program. Oh, and you can have the files as well so you'll know how the network that's enabling these clandestine programs works." Why was he so quick to giver up? European diplomacy? UN sanctions? The efforts of the US state department to convince him to? Unlikely as it appears none of the aforementioned folks were aware that he had serious NBC programs up an running. If you lefties weren't so blinded by your hatred you'd recognize that Reagan's action against Qadhafi coupled with W's invasion of another third world hellhole for the stated purpose of relieving it of its WMD capabilities was enough to convince Qadhafi that he might well be next. Reagan and Bush's willingness to create a credible threat of force (hint for Obama: this requires the occasional application of actual force, not just talk) made the world a safer place. Show me one verifiable instance where diplomacy has matched that record prior to actual hostilities.
As for the emotional appeal you're making, it's weak sauce and the mark of a poor debater. Only a fool makes decisions based on emotional appeals.
