...ever take a class from bob "croc" linder?

my room mate missed his 5th class a few days ago (1 over the max allowed) and a few minutes before class ended today ol' croc was like "and oh yes, mr. peterson, you are no longer enrolled in my class."  he then refused to talk with him about it after class. kind of a douche move imo.

which leads to my main question, should attendance even be taken?  students pay the school but after that if they don't wanna go to class then that should be their own choice. if someone never shows up then chances are they're gonna fail w/out the teacher docking them for attendance.  i graduate at the end of this semester and i for one can honestly say that just having a good attendance record has saved my ass hundreds of times.  seriously, you can be mentally retarded but when the teacher knows you've shown up every class they'll almost never fail you.  still though, i think its pretty effed up that a student can get dropped from a class based on his/her attendance...especially with 2 weeks left in the semester.

attending class can indeed save your ass. the profs really respect you for it.

It's really hard sometimes to attend. Unless you read material before class it's worthless.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

All those students who missed class and then fail bitch and moan to the administrators.  Profs can get get raises and tenure based on how well they are teaching classes.  They are teaching the classes for your sake and if you don't show up you are wasting their time and energy.  Hell I think up to five missed classes is more than generous.

You friend has no one to blame but himself.  The lazy ass knew the rules and decided to disregard them.

I agree with this, 5 classes is a bunch if he makes it known.

I was a history major for a little while and many prof's have a similar policy.  It's probably in the sylabus and was made clear the first day.  he could show up to the office and beg.

oh i def agree to the extent that if it is in the syllabus and you don't follow it, your f*cked.  i dont have any real sympathy for my friend, but i feel that attendance should be left up to the student.  if someone wants to f*ck up their future cause they'd rather sleep than go to class, thats their problem.  profs get get paid to teach a class, not babysit.

upper level history classes are offered every other semester, they fill up quick and if you don't get a class that you need in the fall/spring you have to wait a year until it's available again.

it is very annoying to work hard to put together a decent lecture only to have students either not bother to attend or to not pay attention.

linder is/was a weird dude though.
"these are no longer “games” in the commonly accepted sense of the term. these are free throw shooting contests leavened by the occasional sprint to the other end of the floor."

Loved Linder.  Used to be Mayor of Manhattan.  Goes to Australia every summer to lecture.  Has a Royals hat on about half the week.  Made a huge lecture class interesting to me.  Modern Era was one of the best classes I took.  I'm glad he threw your roomate out of class.  I would have lol'd at him when it happened.  He tells everyone that it will happen first day so your roomate is a moron.

Woody Allen once said that 90% of success is just showing up.  I've always found that to be true.

I'm a little sensitive to this because I hate showing up to some classes and inevitably drop A's to B's, but if the dude says it, he says it.

Huge Royals fan.  Has a picture of himself reaching over the bullpen at the K and catching a home run.  I always wanted to take History of Baseball, but the one spring semester I could have taken it, he didn't offer it.  Grrrrr....

He's a little eccentric, but you'd be too if you had been a prof since the Vietnam era.

I don't remember that policy in any of the three classes I took from him (Modern Era, Hist of Christianity, and Hist of Baseball), but then again, I never missed one because his lectures were always quite good.

Dude should have just gone to class.  Its not that tough.  Although I'm not sure how they can just unilaterally do that so close to the end of the semester when its been paid for.  Could probably challenge that.  Its like buying a bag of Cheetos and having the store take it back from you when you've eaten half of it and not giving you any money for it.

I also loved Linder.  One time for History of Christianity he dressed up like a monk with the hood on and everything and delivered his lecture.  Never mentioned the monk outfit.  He just lectured like it was a normal day.  Great guy.

Woody Allen once said that 90% of success is just showing up.  I've always found that to be true.

I went to grad school with an ex-AF guy who doubled down on hours during enrollment, attened the first week of classes to find out which profs were going to take attendance, then went back to the Keys where he flew cargo planes for the remainder of the semester.  He'd turn up around a week before finals, beg course outlines from our classmates and do the whole thing again next semester.  Worked like a charm.

90% of success is not wasting your time showing up for irrelevant stuff, the other 10% is knowing when to get up and walk out.

I never had Linder, though I did sorta want to take History of Baseball.  Al Hamscher and Ramsay were my two favorites in the history department.  Hamscher's a big Royals fan and calls in to some of the sports radio shows like 1350 and 580, he's fun to listen to.  Ramsay is just a good teacher, but I get a hard on for military history anyway so he could be pretty average and I wouldn't know.

One of the guys I work with is a history grad student and he was complaining of his massive a-holeishness last week.  I only had the guy once and didn't have a problem, but apparently he's an ass to a lot of people.

He's only a bastard if you, like my room mate, never show up to class or do show up but just f*ck around the entire time.  He grades very hard but if you're willing to meet with him outside of class he'll pretty much walk you through everything.

Thing is, I don't think he even has a class with Ramsey.  Ramsey is just the guy in charge of the grad program and he was acting like a pompous ass because he could (he has the big degree, afterall).

I had Ramsey in WWI and we had a group research project that had to be presented.  The book reviews/movie reviews were rediculously hard.

I had Ramsey for WWII and he brought me up in front of the class for a "verbal hi-five" because I was the only person in class that said in my paper that the US was the most racist country involved in WWII.
