Ok, if I get xbox and want live, I have wireless internet.  do I have to buy the 100 dollar adapter or can I run an ethernt cable from my laptop strait to the xbox.  will that work?

You don't need the official accessory. Any wireless access point will work.

You can run it through your laptop, but it's kinda tricky, but not too hard. I had to do it for a while. There are some guides online.

why tricky?  Is it more than just an ethernet cable?  plugging into the modem really isn't an option at all, and I really don't want to pay 100 dollars.

don't repair your old one, it will just break again.  the new system's run cooler and are designed for better air flow.

COD 4 is amazing. Halo 3 is really good, especially online. Oblivion, Lego Star Wars, Bioshock, Forza 2, All the sports games, Rainbow Six Vegas, GRAW, Orange Box, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Gears of War, Burnout Paradise, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Ace Combat 6, Saints Row, etc.

Yeah, I have a HD and wireless adapter etc.  Just need the new console.  HOw do I know if it has the new chip?

If you buy a new one of the cheap ones (aka the Arcade version), it WILL have the new chipset if it has the HDMI port in the back. So if it says HDMI on the box, then you will have the new and improved chipset. I bought one of these a few months ago when my original one finally died and just plugged in my old hard drive and transfered my XBL account and it worked fine.

I've transferred my account back and forth twice now. But I didn't transfer the HDD. Which brings up the question, what is the best way to use 1 account on two machines?  I have one in the living room and one in the bedroom.

Memory card. And recovering accounts, you can do that as many times as you want. Transferring rights to all your DLC and games is allowed once per year.

2.  Each time I go to the grocery store/gas station I"m getting 10-20 dollars back in cash and hiding it.
