The Kansas State football program begins preparations for its 111th season of intercollegiate football and the Wildcats' first under new head coach Ron Prince on Saturday, August 5, with an open practice at Bill Snyder Family Stadium beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The practice is the first of three designated workouts that will be open to both the media and the public during preseason camp, according to Prince. K-State practices on Aug. 12 and 19 will also be open, with both sessions slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. inside Snyder Family Stadium.

Kansas State returns a total of 41 lettermen (20-offense/17-defense/4-specialist), including 30 who have made at least one career start, for the 2006 season. Nine of the Wildcats' returnees started at least six games on offense a year ago, with eight starting at least six games on defense. K-State also returns starters at punter, place-kicker and long-snapper.

Still, a number of intriguing position battles are expected to unfold during training camp, with heated competition expected at the quarterback spot, along the offensive and defensive lines and in the secondary.

The Wildcats will open their 2006 season Saturday, Sept. 2, when K-State hosts Illinois State. It is the first-ever meeting between the Wildcats and Redbirds on the gridiron. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
