The Pottawatomie County sheriff's department Wednesday night arrested a Manhattan High School teacher for unlawful sexual relations with a 17-year-old male student.
Authorities said a Pottawatomie County deputy on patrol found the two in a vehicle parked in the Spillway Marina Park area of Tuttle Creek Dam at about 10 p.m. The 32-year-old female, Katherine J. Harder, a language arts teacher at Manhattan High, was arrested on probable cause of unlawful sexual relations and taken to the Pottawatomie County Jail.
Michele Jones, the coordinator of communications and public relations, said Harder was initially suspended with pay from her teaching duties, and later in the morning submitted her resignation, effective immediately.
Jones said Harder was in her third year of teaching at Manhattan High. The 17-year-old male is a student at Manhattan High. No information has been released about him.
Jones said this kind of incident has not happened involving the school district "in a very long time."
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office will continue the investigation. Harder was released on $3,000 bond.
