I have a Dell Precision M90 (17"). It's way too big and way too powerful for most people. I'd look at the Dell Vostro. Cheap and pretty good value. Toshiba, Apple, Asus, all make good laptops as well. Make sure to get an Intel Core 2 Duo. Ram doesn't matter so much, because you can get 2GB for $80. What are you looking to do with it? How portable do you need it?

dell at home

don't buy extra memory direct from the manufacturer, unless you like to take it in the ass.

Macbook.  The case construction quality isn't as great as I would like, but I don't have any of the headaches of a windows machine (unless I choose to boot into XP.)  Macbook Pro would probably be worth it for the better case.

cause when i downloaded movies and music and crap on my first computer, it crapped out, borrowed my sister's toshiba, that crapped out too, and so far, my mac has performed good as new (1 year old).  i can also use xp if i really need it.  i dunno exactly why it's a lot better other than no viruses, but it's made life so much easier.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I've had a PC for 10+ years, I think I have had a virus 3 or 4 times--once where I had the virus where you couldn't boot.  You had to unplug the network cable and then pwn that virus from there.

If you keep your crap updated and not surf tons of terrible script bugged porn sites, your computer will be a lot cleaner.

Regardless...I'd gladly take a little pain in the ass then be stuck with proprietary software and have the option to actually upgrade my parts to what I would like for a competitive price.

How do people get viruses? Keep stuff updated and don't click on penis enlargement emails. Also, use Firefox. I've been a pc enthusiast nerd for a while now and not once have I gotten a virus.

And stunner, it's not the PC's fault you killed it. It's your's. I've used macs for about a year now and I've had many more issues with them than pc's. The OS is nice looking and simple, but beyond that, it's not that great.
