    Fear the Brick
When JF has....

>40 PA:  0-4 (both losses this year >40PA)
<40PA:  7-2 (2 losses '06 Rutgers, MU)
throws at least 1 TD:  6-1 (1 loss ku '07)
throws at least 1 INT:  3-6 (wins vs. '06 ISU, UT, '07 SJSt.)

When JJ and Patton combine to have..

>100yds rushing:  5-2 (loss to '06 ku, MU)
<100yds rushing: 2-4 (both wins vs. rival UT)

Nothing really earth shattering in those stats, but I was bored.

You run when you win, not win when you run.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2003/07/14/ramblings/stat-analysis/3/

Those are interesting stats, but the NFL is a different game in many ways.

I don't think you have to run to win, but I think the relationship with running and winning in college football is much greater than in the NFL.  You don't have many teams that throw the ball all over for 2 1/2 quarters with little running game then run the ball late to ice it in college like you do in the NFL.

Why is that (assuming it's true)?

The NFL spends much more time on the game and everyone is in theory a great football player.  Though its much easier to find a match-up you can exploit, you are less likely to develop the timing in the passing game b/c you can't spend as much time working on it.  Its easier at the end of the day to develop a decent offensive line and run the ball and then try to throw the ball off of that.  Plus in college its much more reasonable to run the QB; running QBs tend to have short careers in the NFL and/or don't win a ton of games consistently.  Really, how many top ten teams do you see that can't run the ball consistently in college football.  I think you have to run to win, at least to win big games consistently, in college football.

Boston College and South Carolina aren't very good running teams.

Florida only averaged 160/game last year.

Football Outsiders is a major player.  They know what they're doing.  I'm sure they've been tracking it since, and would update it if things changed.

That's true, but they were still very balanced overall.  Ran the ball 57% of the time in the 1st quarter and only in the 2nd quarter did they pass more than they ran it.  Over 4.5 YPC as well.

BC still runs more than they pass it in the first half.  SC does pass more than they run it, but overall they are balanced in their running and passing attempts.

    Working on my attic
Freeman weighs in, and doesn't once mentiona  poor O-line:

The perception, in some circles at least, is that Prince and offensive coordinator James Franklin have been hesitant to call deep passes because of Freeman's past turnover struggles.

But that's not entirely true, according to Freeman. The sophomore quarterback said the reliance on short passes reflects his own development more than any schematic changes by the coaching staff.

"Last year I wanted to throw deep a lot more," Freeman said. "This year I'm trying to keep the drives going, not be so — I don't want to say daring — but careless with the football. When the time's right, take your shots, when it's not, find something underneath."

Freeman admitted it was hard to let go of the gunslinger's mentality that most rocket-armed quarterbacks possess. But after analyzing film of himself from last season, he realized he was forcing too many deep passes into coverage.

"We identified one of the my weaknesses was trying to take too many shots," Freeman said. "On plays that were designed to be underneath, 6- or 7-yard passes, I'd find the one route in the progression that was a deep pass."

Publicly blaming his OL sounds like a great idea.

All I got is OU in 2000.

No doubt.  But he didn't even allude to available time being an issue.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

QFT.

Ron Prince doesn't just produce great football teams, he produces great Americans.
