How about the one earlier in the Auburn game where we took off a helmet and got away with it?

Grabbing the back of the helmet (underneath) is not a penalty, so we didn't "get away" with anything.
I'm not quite sure where you are getting this information, but it's blatantly incorrect.
A defensive player, or an offensive player, cannot grab an opponents helmet in any way, shape, or form. Whether you grab the facemask, the earhole, or the back of the helmet, it's a penalty. Additionally, it's often called "facemasking" when one grabs the earhole or back of the helmet simply because there is no "hand signal" for grabbing another part of the headgear.
