You went quite a bit farther with your adjustments than the NU folks did.  Too light overall IMHO and way too light in the background.  I think if you mask off the background and adjust just the player you can get the same pop without the changes being quite so extreme.

Your look good but yeah, only change the players. Blur the background and make it darker.

I definitely need to get masking down, there were some parts that I wanted to have a little grainy, some parts i needed highlighted, etc.  I'm getting close to where everything looks fake though.  Just need some things smoothed out.

That's exactly what I thought... I got similar results by layering the image on top of itself; then changing the blending properties to color burn; dropping the oppacity of that layer down a bit; then masking out the areas that were too dark.  If I had spent more time on it; I think I could have made it look really good.

heres what i got in about 5 min.

y'all try and change the image brightness/hue/contrast etc around, then go to filter > texture > grain > and set intensity to 0 and mess with the contrast > gaussian blur a little

i think it gives the picture a good hdr effect.
