The last one is so awesome with the visor reflection.  I want to at least adjust pictures to make it look like these.

Quick & dirty: cut the brightness, up the contrast, and maybe up the saturation just a bit as necessary if the contrast doesn't make the colors pop enough to suit you.

true. was just gonna say that.

i did this Q&D in 60 seconds. with time...it can look nice. my way all depends on what color you want to remove.

once this is set..is when i like to mess with saturation..and contrast.

I dunno, the color just pops out in the husker pics.  It just doesn't look real, which looks so cool.

So here's my quick try:

I did pretty much what's been said, but used the curves tool to adjust contrast, instead of a contrast slider.

I also added a touch of edge sharpening to make the whole thing pop a little more.  Not great, but you get what you pay for.

Notice how everything in the background of the NU pics is blurred.  Only the player is in sharp focus.  That's the key.

im telling you..

they desaturate/ maybe a duotone...and then go back in over the red and either overlay or some other crap.

Yeah, I got caught up on those last ones and forgot about the first two.  It's gotta be more than just the red, though.  We should be able to get a fairly close approximation with purple.

yeah. its the best.

they combined a few filters ( on top of the other stuff) to make it look borderline illustration photo.

we'll get it down.

Stunner - try masking off your foreground object then *really* pulling down the brightness and *really* upping the contrast; if you're using the newest Photoshop try setting the brightness/contrast controls to the old style, they'll give you much "harder" results.

They also used a mask on the two players in the foreground, the halo is pretty sloppy.  The grass & sky colors are too saturated to be natural too so I'd imagine the worked the whole shot over then masked off the players and really dialed in the colors there.  They might even have masked the jerseys off separately and upped the saturation on them even more.  Those sorts of multiple passes will give you that kind of unnatural result without making the whole background look garish.

I reposted mine.

The road uni's aren't the best for this.

This really isn't my bag, ECN will get this nailed pretty quick I think.

I really do think that they're using a pretty healthy USM mask over the subjects.

Here's a quickie, did it in Irfanview in less time than it takes Photoshop to load on this machine.

Original:

Gamma: original 1.00, reduced to 0.72
Contrast: original 0, increased to 28
Saturation: original 0, increased to 41

There's too much contrast and color in the background though, it distracts you from the players in the foreground.  I'd have to go into Photoshop & mask the players off to fix it but you get the idea.

Here's another with a similar gamma change but doubling down on the contrast & saturation changes:

I'm assuming that a higher resolution camera would help too.  Obviously these pictures were already retouched.  There's a lot more texture in their arms in the Nubb pics.

Would like to show off LaMark's guns

even though that didn't help the nubbs at all this year :nahnah:

Likely as not that's just a side effect of adding extreme amounts of contrast.

This might have been done by a nubb photographer, so it does seem like the roadies don't get much better than that, although that pic looks more real than the other nubb pics.

They haven't used the same post processing treatment on the pic with our roadies.

And it's not so much the resolution of the camera, but working with original full resolution files could make quite a bit of difference.  And if they were RAW...  :lick:

Whatever you do, I think you'll want to selectively saturate/desaturate:

Not bad at all other than losing the faces but that'll happen unless you take the time to mask them off and bring them up separately.
