Breaking Down The Top Five:
1 & 2. Kansas State and Kansas both have great returning talent, mostly ku but, K-States number 2 recruiting class will bring much needed talent to Manhattan to replace last years seniors class. Kansas State has a pretty tough out of conference schedule playing Notre Dame and Oregon. Frank Martins 1st year at K-State will be a memorable one. Kansas has been picked 3rd, 4th, and 6th in various pre-season polls with K-State following closely behind at 9th and 11th place. K-State will be out for revenge at the Sunflower Showdown matchup at Manhattan hoping to beat Kansas for the first time in Bramlage Coliseum. With Michael Beasley heading the recruiting class K-State fans should be in for a fun season. Kansas made an appearance in the NCAA tournament last year and K-State made it to the second round of the NIT. Kansas finished 1st in regular season Big 12 play and Kansas State finished 4th, their best finish ever in the conference.
3. The Longhorns have some returning talent but will have a hard time filling the spot of Kevin Durant. The Longhorns have been picked 9th, 14th, and 15th in various preseason polls. Texas made an appearance in the NCAA tournament last year and finished 3rd in regular season Big 12 play.
4 & 5. Intra state rivals Texas Tech and Texas A&M have a level playing field going into the 2007-2008 season. Both teams have returning talent and potentially exceptional recruiting classes. Texas A&M and new coach Mark Turgeon are hoping for an exciting season. Both teams made appearances in the NCAA tournament last year. Texas A&M finished 2nd in regular season Big 12 play and Texas Tech finished 5th.
Breaking Down 6-9:
6 & 7. Missouri and Oklahoma State both had an average 06-07 season. Missouri finished the season in 6th place regular season play and Oklahoma State finished very closely behind in 7th place and made an appearance in the NIT.
8 & 9. Oklahoma and Nebraska also had average season last year, not very exciting but not depressing. Neither teams made it to post season play. Both have been considered "sleepers" in the Big 12. Oklahoma finished 9th in regular season play and Nebraska finished 10th. Both teams have great potential but have very little talent.
Breaking Down 10-12:
10. Iowa State had a losing record in the 06-07 season but finished 8th in regular season play.
11 & 12. Colorado and Baylor have both been outcasts of the Big 12 conference over the past couple years. Neither team having any great outstanding moments or players. Both teams had losing records last year with Baylor finishing 11th and Colorado finishing 12th.
