"I just have great respect for what Ron (Prince) has done and the way his guys play in every phase," said Tomey, whose Spartans will play Prince's Wildcats at 6:05 p.m. Saturday in Manhattan.

"Bill Snyder did the best job of coaching in the history of college football at Kansas State, because it was such a difficult challenge for so many for so long," Tomey said. "Bill just changed things completely. Ron Prince is doing a tremendous job, but obviously Bill set the stage for that."

"I used to go see a coach every spring that I thought was doing a great job and just try to learn as much as I can," Tomey explained. "I came to Manhattan one spring and stayed a couple days with Bill and Sharon."

"Probably the thing I was most struck with was just his attention to detail," Tomey said, adding that Snyder praised president Jon Wefald and others for their unwavering support in making K-State a top-notch program. "It was a group effort."

"My thought is, 'Wow.' ... I'm so impressed with what they did at Auburn. They smothered them with their defense. (Josh) Freeman is a terrific quarterback. They just make everything difficult because of the way they play. I admire how hard they play, how physical they are."

Seems like a guy who gets it...and knows his team is going to get slaughtered.

Tomey used to be the HC at Arizona before John Macovich took over and buried the program in the desert sand.  Tomey had some good teams at U of A.  I recall them beating Nebraska in a bowl game in the mid to late 90's with what they called the "Desert Storm Defense".  Old school ball coach but very good.

"Tomey had some good teams at U of A."

Tomey is the definition of mediocre.  A bowl game maybe every other year, and 2 really good teams...'93 and '98.  He coached at U of A for almost 15 years!

He's at it again.....

"(Arizona State) is the best team we've played," he said, "and Kansas State, I feel, is a better team than Arizona State."
