Skycat - what was the elevation where you took that first shot, and where, Rockies?  Did the lizard make the right choice?

The first one was taken on Haleakala, a dead volcano on Maui.  Elevation wise, google says it's a 10k peak, so I was probably at about 8000 feet or so for that one.

That lizard lived in the drain in our bathroom sink for about a week, until I set him free.

I forgot to mention, the first one and the one of the bridge were made with a Sigma 10-20 lens.  The last one of my son was made with a Sigma 30 f/1.4.  And the rest were with various Nikon lenses.

I shoot with a Nikon D70s, at least until Novemeber when I'll get a new Nikon D300.  :lick:

I know it's been a while since the question was asked, but:

Sigma is the best of the third party lens makers IMO.  Tamron and Tokina have a few good lenses as well, but I'm not sure if they have stuff in the focal lengths that you're interested in.

You can get away with an f/4 or maybe even f/5.6 if you are only going to shoot outdoors during the day, but you'll want faster than that (f/2.8) if you want to shoot inside or at night games.

On the plus side, that 20D of yours will allow you to push the ISO up pretty high and still get good results.

Some really nice shots in this thread.

Here are a few of mine I like:

Beautiful stuff;   And thanks for the advice.  I think for now, I'm going to have to settle for something cheap until I can make enough $$ to get what I really want.

And BTW, since there are a lot photographers here...   are any of you members of www.sportsshooter.com ?

I've been looking around that place for some time and have been wanting to become a member, but you need current member  to sponsor you.

Yeah, sports is one of the most expensive things to shoot.  Big glass = $$$$$.

I havne't done any sports photography myself, although I'd like to give it a try sometime.  I've checked out sportsshooter a few times, but I don't know any members.

Hadn't been on this thread for a while. Skycat, cyclist, slimz, ECN.....all great shots. I took a little excursion today and came up with some stuff that isn't the the level you guys have, but they're decent for me. I have a crappy little point-and-click and it's ok for this kind of stuff:
