Quote
Former K-State QB Evridge misses his fiancée in Manhattan
By HOWARD RICHMAN
The Kansas City Star

MANHATTAN, Kan. | Former Kansas State quarterback Allan Evridge, believe it or not, sometimes misses this place so much it hurts.

It’s not because Evridge believes he made an unwise decision to transfer a year ago from K-State to Wisconsin. It’s not because Aggieville is the hot spot to gather with friends. And it’s not because Call Hall on campus makes a mean milkshake.

Really, it’s all about the girl.

Evridge is engaged to K-State volleyball player Stacey Spiegelberg. They’ll tie the knot Jan. 12 in Overland Park.

“This last year being apart has been pretty difficult,” Evridge said earlier this week. “It will make things easier when I get to see her every morning.”

Until that time, however, Evridge and Spiegelberg hope to play key roles in their programs.

Evridge, a junior, learned Wednesday that he is running No. 2 behind senior Tyler Donovan at QB for Wisconsin, ranked No. 7 in the country. Spiegelberg, a senior setter, is determined to help the Wildcats advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in school history after missing out last year. Her team got off to a good start, opening its season with a 3-2 win over No. 14 Cal Poly on Friday in Wichita.

So who’s the better athlete? Evridge doesn’t hesitate.

“She’s a better athlete than I am,” he said. “I love it that she’s competitive. She’s a great athlete. That doesn’t hurt my feelings at all.”

In fact, friends joke with Evridge and Spiegelberg that they orchestrated this love connection with a purpose in mind.

“They say we’re doing it for the gene pool,” Evridge said.

Spiegelberg, though, can’t imagine she could’ve found a better match than Evridge.

“He’s just different from all the other guys I met. He’s an extremely good person. I love him so much,” she said.

Mutual friends introduced Evridge and Spiegelberg. Their relationship was blossoming when Evridge was emerging as K-State’s QB of the future in 2005. He made six starts that season, throwing for what was then the freshman record for passing yards in a season with 1,365.

But after coach Bill Snyder retired and Ron Prince entered, Evridge was part of a mass exodus by signal callers. Evridge, Kevin Lopina and Allen Webb all left before the 2006 season after Josh Freeman, who broke Evridge’s freshman passing mark last season with 1,780 yards, arrived on the scene.

“I choose not to get into that,” Evridge said when asked why he left. “It may not make the situation look very good.”

The hardest part was leaving Spiegelberg behind.

“She was supportive. She was like, ‘You’ve got to get out of here,’ ” Evridge said.

Spiegelberg’s take: “I know he didn’t want to leave here and leaves his friends and me and stuff behind, but in the end, he almost had to.”

Evridge says he speaks at least twice a day to Spiegelberg, who as a high school freshman helped Blue Valley Northwest win a Kansas state championship.

“And we both got Web cams so we can talk to each other on the Internet,” Spiegelberg said.

Their engagement was right out of a fairytale. The big moment came during Christmas break last year in Bend, Ore. And guys, listen up. This is pretty good stuff on how to pop the question.

“One night he said, ‘Let’s go for a sleigh ride.’ We went through the mountains, at sunset, he stopped the ride, and got down on one knee. Really sweet,” Spiegelberg said.

This wasn’t a case of the girl’s parents being cautious that their daughter got involved with a football player. After all, Spiegelberg’s dad, Craig, played offensive tackle at Oregon State.

“Our theory on Allan is he took a detour to K-State to meet Stacey, then went to Wisconsin, where it was meant to be,” said Spiegelberg’s mom, Jeanne.

Spiegelberg plans to graduate in December, and move to Madison, Wis., after the wedding to be with Evridge while he finishes his career as a Badger.

That will be the perfect ending for Evridge.

“When I first saw her I thought, ‘I’ve got to find myself a girl like that.’ Stacey was way more than I ever thought she would be,” Evridge said.

I've debated doing an "allan evridge sucks" youtube for months now. I didn't want to do it because it was mean, but this goes too far. &@#% that &@#%er.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I'm amazed at the obsession and ridiciulous jealousy the jock sniffers in the KSU fandom have towards this kid. He's got a hotter than hot future wife, and a will see playing time at a National Championship level program in Wisconsin.

Lol.  Yep, every program needs an Adam Helm around for mop up duty.

“Our theory on Allan is he took a detour to K-State to meet Stacey, then went to Wisconsin, where it was meant to be,” said Spiegelberg’s mom, Jeanne.

Lol.  Where what was meant to be?

See, Allan is and will always be a back up at the D-1 level, whether it was here, Wisconsin or the next school he transfers to.  The only thing that blows for us is that he's not riding the pine behind Freeman.  Allan definitely probably is better that Carson Coffman.

I'm living in Wisconsin now so I get a good dose of Badger football coverage on the evening news. Haven't heard his name mentioned yet. They have been stuck on the other guy for a while. I guess it was 'meant to be' for AE to be a backup at Wisconsin away from his girl than being a backup at KSU with his girl....weird.

I'm a big advocate of making assumptions about people by the way they present themselves and then sticking to my guns through thick and thin.  He's just one of those people that for some reason I think is a hell of a good guy.

True story; even though I think Kevin Spacey is an amazing actor, I hate his &@#%ing guts.  No real reason... just a gut instinct.

If Evridge starts at UW in his career, you can remove the "National Championship Contender" label from the Badgers. The big eleven is weak, I wish we could play Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, and Minnesota every year.

To the most overrated major conference....

I don't care about him.  His mom was annoying.  I don't think it really benefits him being at Wisconsin, because he's not good enough to play in the league, at least not at QB.  If you're not trying to play football after you graduate, why leave the school your fiance and friends are at just so you can 'start' at another school?  (LOL he didn't even get to start because he's not a good QB.)  I don't buy the story that he was 'kicked off' the team.  Maybe he was told he couldn't play quarterback anymore, but another position would probably be better for him anyways.  Maybe linebacker ala Nick Reid style.

I am jealous of him though..Stacey=

I guess I took the quote a little differently.  As in, AE was thinking, "Why the hell did I go to KSU?  Well, I guess I did meet my wife there so maybe it was meant to be."  Not that he was meant to be a backup QB away from his girlfriend.
Once you get past the ethics, the rest is easy.

    Hey, basketball!!!
I was totally in favor of moving AE to LB. And if not that, kick his ass off of the team.

HILARIOUS!!!

Here's the part that was missing:

“This last year being apart has been pretty difficult,” Evridge said earlier this week. “It will make things easier when I get to see her every morning.”

Until that time, however, Evridge will rub his pecker to a nub."  :jerkoff:
