OT: Has anyone tried effing around with a HDTV tv tuner dealy?

The one built into the set?

no, i mean like one that connects to your PC, dude.

Sorry, no my PC just has a regular tv tuner.  When I upgrade my PC I want to get a HD tuner card though.  That would make things so much easier.

ati all in a wonder sounds good.

my dvr is gay, only 8 hours of HD recording. and doing a straight record to my PC is very unstable.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

The higher the contrast ratio of the screen, the better the color intensity on the LCD or Plasma.  You get away with anything 800:1 and up and still have a great picture.  Plasma's contrast ratios will be in the 10,000 and up range.  But you are comparing apples to oranges there.  This is something that manufactures really try and promote, but it's not as important as other features on LCDs.

Also, Stunner, search the forums on the site for credit cards.  There is a thread that lists the best credit cards available and which ones have the best deals going on.  No interest, free money, rewards, etc.  It's always updated too.  The guys will also mention who to stay away from and relay some of their experiences to others.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-40-LCD-HDTV-LN-T4042H/sem/rpsm/context/99001426/oid/174197/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

So I assume 7000:1 is plenty for contrast ratio.

So I think I might try and get this one...good buy?  I know it's 720p, but it's Samsung, so you know it's good.  Good price too, I can pick it up in OP and save money on shipping.

Pull the trigger!

Seriously? :blindfold:

$%#&ing @#!%!!!!!

Not currently available

Mac Mall has if for $90 more & Butterfly Photo for $100 more.  You might call and see if they'll price match.  My guess is they will since this is probably last year's model and most of these guys will be trying to kill off inventory ahead of the new products that are just starting to show.

Does that have the cable card for HD?  I really want one of those on my next PC.  It is really not worth my time at this point to get a new one for my PC.  Get one and tell me how it works.

Lol, ya 7000:1 is plenty.  Also be sure that the response time is below 8ms.  Samsung is one of the makers of all LCDs, so they usually have great screens.

Stunner......I just bought the 40 in. Samsung LCD.  I got it for $1,079 at Sears because they did a price match for me.  They originally are 1,600 and Sears had it down to 1,299.  Pretty sweet.  Actually.........really sweet.  Find one and buy it.  You'll love it.

Having watched the new Pioneer for a few days now I can say with some authority, "Screw the cost, burn up mom's credit card and just get one."

good/bad?  why is the lcd equivalent more expensive?  15,000:1 contrast is good right?  i like bright pictures.

Contrast ratios are meaningless as there's no standard by which they're measured, they're pure marketing hype.  Besides, the human eye probably can't differentiate past about 10k:1 anyway.

Since you're burning up the credit line on mom's card just go for one of these.  They're doing free shipping right now so it's practically a steal.

I can't use mommy's credit card anymore, I need the best I can without going over 1000.  Might have to reread the thread, although this is starting to look attractive again.

Oh in that case definitely spend the next 12-24 months drinking $0.50 draws and watching your HDTV at your local sports bar while saving your pocket change and waiting on Pioneer to release the 9th gen kuro they just showed at CES.  The actual displayed black levels are darker than the unpowered screens on their 8th gen sets, they will be the killer app in the 1080p space for a loooong time.

Here's all you need to know: on the left the current reigning champ of black levels & picture quality for all consumer flat panel displays, on the right the next model featuring infinite contrast:

Here's the one I got for xmas.  I love it, but my viewing distance is not more than 10 feet so I don't know what it would look like in a big room.

no.  there's a couple main things to consider-
A) the type of tv: crt, lcd, plasma, and DLP/projection.  they all vary in picture quality, no reason to buy an HDTV if the picture sux0rs.

B) the type of hd: 720p, 1080i, 1080p. usually this is a second consideration and money dictates where you end up on this scale.  most people would have a hard time telling you the difference b/w a 720p and a 1080i/p.

the type of room you're putting the tv in should dictate what the answer to A is, how much you have to spend will determine the answer to B.

i've heard good things about the Olevia LCD's-
http://promotions.newegg.com/olevia/080307/index.html

I got an Olevia 32" for Christmas and i love it.

I have seen thick projection TVs for around $600.  40".

Check  best buys .  They may not be selling them anymore though because everyone thinks they're ghetto I am guessing.

I've been researching this for a long time, and it seems to me that if you want to go with a 42" Plasma than the Panasonic PX77U with the anti-glare coating is the way to go.  I've never read a bad review and they all say that the SD picture quality is better than any other plasma.  Not too expensive, and free shipping on amazon.

stunner, either way it will be the best television you've ever owned.  you can't go wrong.

Go with the Samsung.  They have the best picture.  I got a Samsung 5054 a couple weeks ago and the Green Bay game last weekend was amazing in HD.  Granted this is a plasma, but the picture is the same.

I've got an Olevia LCD.  I want a Plasma, preferably a kuro or whatever Panasonic comes out with in the next few months.
