Michael Bennett had some nice runs during Wednesday’s early workout in full pads, but he also dropped a perfect pass over the middle … Running back Derrick Ross leveled safety Chad Williams on a run … Kris Wilson made a beautiful, over-the-shoulder catch in the right corner of the end zone on a pass from Brodie Croyle.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson was the standout of the morning practice. First he flattened running back Kolby Smith. A few minutes later, he stretched out for an impressive interception of a Damon Huard… Benny Sapp made a shoestring interception during the afternoon workout … Tackles McBride and Tank Tyler took reps with the first-team.… Safety Jarrad Page broke up a would-be touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez.

The Chiefs will practice in the morning and afternoon.

Brodie Croyle hooked up with former Missouri receiver Brad Ekwerekwu on what looked to be a beautiful touchdown pass in the back of the end zone. But Ekwerekwu was ruled out of bounds. … One day after dropping four passes, Samie Parker struggled again Thursday. He had two more drops, including one that drew boos after the ball hit him between the numbers. … Rookie tight end Michael Allan made his best play so far in training camp with an athletic catch on a pass from Casey Printers.

The MVP of Thursday morning’s practice was linebacker William Kershaw, who picked off one pass and tipped another that led to an interception. … Backup safety Greg Wesley was among the veteran players who did not work out.

Running back Larry Johnson is in a holdout and has yet to report to camp. Rookie wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick, remains unsigned.

The Chiefs will travel to Mankato, Minn., for a practice against the Vikings at 6:30 tonight. The workout will conclude with a scrimmage, although Edwards said the Chiefs’ starters won’t participate. Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson, a former Oklahoma star, left Thursday’s practice because of what is being called a minor hip pointer and is unlikely to participate in the weekend scrimmages against the Chiefs.

Croyle worked with the first-team offense and routinely hit most of the relatively short, safe passes that now are the staple of the Chiefs more conservative offense.

Croyle hit 17 of 19 passes in seven-on-seven, gold zone offense and team drills. Few of his passes traversed more than 12 yards of field position, but none ended up in Vikings hands and he was sacked only once.

Playing with the second unit, Huard was victimized by mis-run routes and a couple sacks. He also was intercepted by former Kansas corner Charles Gordon, a Viking reserve. Veteran receiver Rod Gardner saved Huard twice with a pair of leaping receptions.

Former Kansas State linebacker Ben Leber, now with Minnesota, did not practice Friday. He has been sidelined for part of the first week of camp with a calf injury.

The teams practice again tonight, this time in River Falls, Wis.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards cut Saturday’s scrimmage with the Vikings about 45 minutes short after a series of minor skirmishes, almost all of which involved Minnesota defensive end Ray Edwards.

Damon Huard had a much better night than Brodie Croyle as the two players battled to become the starting quarterback. Huard threw the most impressive pass of the practice, a 21-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez.

Croyle struggled. He had one pass intercepted by Heath Farwell, a reserve linebacker. Farwell should have intercepted a second Croyle pass, but he dropped it instead.

On another play, Croyle had rookie wide receiver Maurice Price open, but threw a bad pass and an incompletion.

Justin Medlock made five of six field-goal attempts. He was successful from 30, 33, 36, 40 and 45 yards. His 43-yard attempt was wide left. … Kolby Smith was again impressive. He made a couple of long runs. … Wide receiver Brent Little, who grew up in Kansas City, made a leaping catch of an over-the-middle Croyle pass for a big gain.

Linebacker Keyaron Fox made an excellent play during seven-on-seven drills when he dove to break up a pass. … Linebacker Justin Phinisee intercepted a pass during the same drills. … Rookie tackle Tank Tyler worked with the first team defensive line. … Linebacker Napoleon Harris missed the workout to deal with a personal matter, Edwards said. … Backup safety Greg Wesley appeared to have a nice pass breakup but was called for interference instead.

The Chiefs have the day off and will return to practice on Monday.

Damion McIntosh was taken from the field on a motorized cart at Monday’s afternoon practice because of what the Chiefs called a right knee sprain. Will Svitek replaced McIntosh at left tackle after his departure. Kyle Turley was busy filling in for right tackle Chris Terry, who has a minor shoulder injury and didn’t practice.

Rookie receiver/kick returner Ean Randolph continues to impress Chiefs coaches. Randolph made two tough catches in tough coverage Friday, both on passes from Damon Huard. … Kris Wilson and Boomer Grigsby both dropped throws. … Tight end Tony Gonzalez only participated in one practice Monday. “He’s been in one-a-days for the last 10 years,” Edwards said.

Starting tackle Alfonso Boone returned to the field Monday after missing time because of an injured tendon in his finger. Boone worked out in the morning but not the afternoon. … Linebacker Derrick Johnson and cornerback Patrick Surtain batted down passes during the morning workout. … Greg Wesley and Jarrad Page had interceptions during the evening workout.

Linemen Chris Terry (shoulder) and Chris Bober (hip), running back Priest Holmes (neck) and tight end Jason Dunn (back) did not practice.

The Chiefs were relieved to learn that left tackle Damion McIntosh will miss only four to six weeks because of a right knee sprain he received in Monday afternoon’s practice.

Under that timetable, McIntosh would miss the entire preseason but could be ready to play by the regular-season opener Sept. 9 in Houston. A six-week scenario would mean McIntosh sits out against the Texans and the following week’s game against the Bears in Chicago and returns Sept. 23 against Minnesota at Arrowhead Stadium.

The left-tackle spot belongs — for now — to Will Svitek, a sixth-round draft pick in 2005 who has played offensive line in just one NFL regular-season game. Svitek was a defensive lineman in college at Stanford, but he’s been nothing but an offensive tackle since joining the Chiefs.

Coordinator Mike Solari is normally not a screamer, so you know he’s upset when he interrupts practice to call the offensive players around him, as he did Tuesday morning. Ranting about the need for better concentration, Solari also shouted, “We’ve got to get better today!” … Brodie Croyle had a big day. He threw a dart to wide receiver Samie Parker, who made a tough catch in traffic. Croyle also hooked up with Eddie Kennison twice for big gains. … Though Kyle Turley would be the backup left tackle in a game, rookie Herb Taylor was the second-string left tackle in practice.

Jared Allen again made the defensive play of the day when he broke into the passing lane and intercepted Damon Huard’s screen pass intended for Smith. … With starting tackle Alfonso Boone working in both practices for the first time in several days, the Chiefs had their full complement of core defensive players.

Running backs Priest Holmes (conditioning), Greg Hanoian (shoulder) and Gilbert Harris (hamstring); wide receivers Dwayne Bowe (conditioning) and Maurice Price (shoulder); tight end Jason Dunn (back); offensive linemen Damion McIntosh (knee), Chris Bober (hip) and Ramiro Pruneda (personal reasons); and linebacker David Hicks (knee) did not practice.

Croyle is going to start the preseason opener vs. Cleveland

Kris Wilson missed Wednesday’s workout for what Herm Edwards called “personal reasons.” Edwards said Wilson has returned home and will not play in Saturday’s game at Cleveland. … Kicker Justin Medlock made a 53-yard field goal. … Brodie Croyle hooked up with Chris Hannon on a 38-yard pass under tough coverage. He also threw a touchdown pass to tight end Tony Gonzalez. … Rookie lineman George Batiste was helped off the field after injuring his right knee. … Receiver Dwayne Bowe went through noncontact drills after the workout concluded

Safety Greg Wesley continues to practice well. He had a nice pass breakup Wednesday. … Safety Bernard Pollard also had an impressive pass deflection. … Second-round draft pick Turk McBride played at both tackle and defensive end. … Cornerback Tyron Brackenridge continues to have a good camp. … Former K-State safety Jon McGraw is working with the second team, while Chad Williams, who played in 16 games for San Francisco last season, works with the third team.

Holmes, tight end Jason Dunn, defensive tackle Alfonso Boone, offensive lineman Chris Bober, Bowe, linebacker David Hicks and receiver Maurice Price did not practice.

Offensive tackle Damion McIntosh had arthroscopic surgery on his sprained right knee Thursday.

McIntosh injured the knee in practice this week and is being replaced in the starting lineup by Will Svitek.

The Chiefs haven’t said when they expect McIntosh to return, but they’re hoping he’s ready to play early in the regular season.

Rookie QB, starting tackles are Svitek and Turley, stud RB is still holding out, new WR hasn't had a real practice yet.

Hope that defense is something special!

Oh yeah...breaking in a new kicker, long snapper and return man.

Chiefs!

Getting young I don't mind.

But at OT they're not getting young, they're getting suck.

And that makes it awfully hard to get young and good at QB and WR.

here is why they are average.

each year they finish in the middle of the pack.

each year they draft in the middle of the pack

each year is another percy snow's infamous moped ride.

the circle is vicious.

Rookie wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, the Chiefs’ No. 1 draft pick, practiced with the team for the first time in training camp. Bowe, who didn’t arrive in River Falls until last week because he hadn’t agreed to contract terms, snared a touchdown pass from Casey Printers.

Coach Herm Edwards said Bowe would play some in Thursday night’s preseason game against Miami at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs signed WR Bobby Sippio of the AFL.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez injured his knee on one of the last plays of practice. He limped off the field when it was over, but the injury didn’t appear to be serious. Justin Medlock made all five of his field-goal attempts from 30, 35, 41, 47 and 55 yards.

The Chiefs had a different alignment in their nickel defense from what they had shown previously. Rookie nickel back Tyron Brackenridge was replaced by Benny Sapp, who played cornerback with Patrick Surtain shifting to nickel back. … Starting tackle Alfonso Boone, who has been limited because of an injured finger, should play against the Dolphins. … Safety Bernard Pollard came a long way to break up a sideline pass intended for Eddie Kennison in a 2-minute drill.

The Chiefs will hold the summer’s final practice in River Falls before packing their bags and returning to Kansas City on Wednesday.

HCHE wanted to pick a starting QB after the second preseason game but it might take a little bit longer. Huard will start against the Dolphins and Croyle will replace him during the second quarter. Edwards would like to see both players lead sustained drives, manage the game well and not commit turnovers.

Kicker Justin Medlock once again was perfect during field-goal practice. He made kicks from 32, 34, 37 and 39 yards. … The Chiefs could only hold their tempers for so long. Offensive tackle Kyle Turley and defensive end Chris Harris engaged in one of the better fights in camp. No punches were thrown, but they shoved each other and wound up grappling on the ground before they were pried apart. … Shades of the Cleveland finish: The Croyle-led offense moved to the 1-yard line in a 2-minute drill. But the offense was penalized for a false start and since fewer than 10 seconds remained, the Chiefs shouldn’t have been able to run a play because of the 10-second runoff rule. Feeling charitable, Edwards allowed the offense one more play. Croyle fired a pass toward the corner of the end zone but it was deflected and bounced right to wide receiver Brad Ekwerekwu in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. And that play ended training camp.

Rookie Tyron Brackenridge was back as the first-team nickel back. … The Chiefs were impressed in Cleveland by reserve cornerback Dimitri Patterson. He could play himself into contention for a roster spot if he plays that well against the Dolphins.

The Chiefs will break training camp in River Falls, Wis., and return to Kansas City, where they will continue the preseason with Thursday night’s game against Miami.

What we've learned from Chiefs training camp

1. Defense will have to carry the Chiefs, at least early in the season. Between mediocre quarterback play in the preseason, Damion McIntosh’s injury, other offensive line issues and Larry Johnson’s absence, it’s obvious the Chiefs are headed for a slow offensive start.

2. The quarterback decision might not be an easy one, but it’s well-defined. Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard couldn’t be much different as players. Croyle gives the Chiefs more capability while Huard is the safer choice.

3. The Chiefs need Larry Johnson. OK, we already knew this, but camp confirmed it. Michael Bennett is a good complementary player and Kolby Smith is advanced for a fifth-round draft pick, but even together they are not capable of providing what LJ does.

4. The Chiefs should have drafted a cornerback. Better hope Ty Law and Patrick Surtain last the season. The pickings become slim quickly after they’re out.

5. Justin Medlock will be OK. It can be a rough ride with a rookie kicker, but Medlock has what it takes. He had one bad day during camp, but bounced back nicely. He had the bad preseason game against Miami but he’ll rebound from that, too.

This isn't Chiefs related, but check out this post from a Browns message board. It's an all-timer.

For you people who are good at taking pictures of TV's — or however it is that you get photos onto a computer — I'd love to see a play-by-play breakdown of K-State games like the one at the link:
