Why not double check on a guy named "Shorty" who has proven to be incompetent in the past?  Who is responsible for that?

If someone has to double and triple check every manager's job why the hell have a manager in the first place?

The decision on Shorty was made long before the Texas Bowl.  The cleat fiasco just made the decision even easier to sell to everyone else.

The problem was obvious... many of the "long-time employee's" got comfortable not having to be truly accountable during the Snyder era because Bill was the type that trusted no one and felt he had to be involved daily in all decisions made in Vanier.  It is why a lot of good people didn't stay around.  They didn't like being micromanaged and treated like they weren't smart enough to do a job all by themselves.  Others got comfortable and lazy knowing Coach Snyder was going to do their work without any consequences to them.

When Prince came along he basically said "if you are a capable manager at your job then you don't need me micromanaging every decision connected with your job".  If you aren't capable of doing your job well without being micromanaged then we'll go fine someone who can.

Personally I would much prefer working for that kind of boss as opposed to the micromanager boss.

Two days before the game, the field was in fine condition.

Actually it wasn't.  In the Texans-Colts game four days before, guys were sliding all over the place.  Ron Dayne rolled his ankle in the first quarter.  chum's reasoning is justified.

If this was known, someone probably thought to themselves, "thank God we have that nice guy Shorty as our equipment manager. He surely checked out the field and I trust him to have the proper equipment."

If they did think that and the equip manager can, well, manage equip, Shorty should be fired. If they did not think that because Shorty was incompetent at his job, Shorty should be fired. Not that hard to think through.

The decision for shortys contract to not be renewed was decided before the bowl game, Shorty was not notified of this, but had the feeling of it.  The only shoes that we had in stock were were molded.  On the note of using longer cleats, it is against NCAA rules to use anything longer than 1/2" cleats.  I looked at rutgers cleats before the game and they were using mostly the same cleats as we were.  Also the players were notified to bring all shoes they had.  We were not allowed to be on the field at all the week prior to the game, because of painting, letting it dry out etc.  If you watched the Texans Colts game on Sunday you could tell the field was terrible.  The firing of Shorty was inevitable, but it could have been handled way differently and the guy would not be as miserable.
