06/05/07 — KSU Foundation to build new office on Manhattan campus

The KSU Foundation is planning to purchase a tract of land from Kansas State University as the site for a new foundation office building. The purchase has been approved by the Kansas legislature and will be finalized during the summer. The purchase price will be determined by a statutory procedure that includes three independent appraisals. The 14-acre site is situated in the northwest quadrant of the intersection of Kimball and Denison avenues. It has approximately 712 feet of frontage on Kimball Avenue and 734 feet of frontage on Denison Avenue. It is located directly across the street west of the Manhattan Fire Station at 2000 Denison Avenue.

“The foundation has simply outgrown our facility,” said Paul Stephenson, Wichita, Kan., chairman of the foundation executive committee. “We have experienced tremendous growth in terms of annual fundraising and asset management and desperately need more space to conduct our work to support the university. In 1996, contributions to the KSU Foundation totaled $21.7 million and in 2006 the total contributions were $92.8 million. Our staff has grown from 35 to 100 during that same period of time, while our fundraising efficiency in terms of cost per dollar raised has remained relatively constant.”

“We are delighted to have the foundation in a very visible location on campus,” said K-State President Jon Wefald. “There is no question that private philanthropy is allowing the university to grow and excel in areas that would otherwise go unfunded. Approximately one quarter of the university’s operating budget comes from the state. The remainder of the operating budget comes from three sources: tuition, grants and contracts, and private philanthropic support given through the KSU Foundation. The collaborative efforts of the donors, the university staff and the foundation staff are providing a margin of excellence at K State. The truth is we have a great team at K-State on all fronts.”

A committee named by the foundation’s executive committee will oversee the process and make recommendations to the executive committee for action. Members are Dennis Law, dean, College of Architecture, Planning and Design; executive committee members Paul Stephenson, Wichita, Kan., Lee Harris, Leawood, Kan., and Curt Frasier, Beloit, Kan.; Charles Reagan, associate to the president; Lorne Render, director of the Beach Museum; and former foundation executive committee chairmen Dick Thiessen and Nelson Galle, both of Manhattan.

The building committee is overseeing the process of architect selection and building design. Letters soliciting interest were sent to every K-State architecture graduate. Those interested are participating in a selection process that will culminate in interviews with the building committee during June.

Funding for the new building will be generated from the sale of tax-exempt bonds issued by the foundation. Projections indicate the building will be approximately 50,000 square feet.

Susan Benz, Benz Resource Group, Austin, Texas, has been hired as the building project manager. A joint venture formed by GE Johnson, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Hutton Construction, Wichita, Kan. has been named as the project contractor. It is expected that construction could begin in the spring of 2008.

“This is an exciting chapter in the foundation’s 63-year history of serving Kansas State University,” said KSU Foundation CEO and President Gary Hellebust. “It is gratifying to know the reason we need to pursue a new building is due to the generosity of donors in support of the university. We have every intention of continuing to serve the university with increasing levels of philanthropic support.”

Hellebust added that parts of the foundation building, located at 2323 Anderson Avenue, are currently occupied by departments of the university. He expects that the entire building will be utilized by the university when the new foundation building is complete

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Where will the sheep go?

And Rusty and Fatty nail it . . . I hope it looks nice, and what a great place to have a nice building.  Pike . . . look at these guys for guidance.   See, nothing tells your inner city urban based black athlete "you should come here man" like sheep pens and muddy grass parking lots.

Now, after years of waiting, the areas around our two main sports venues are getting a vital makeover.  Jardine is being totally renovated, the Bio Science Lab, the hospital expansion, the new Condos just to the Northeast. . . now if Grain Science would just get cracking and get their main new building built they'll be a nice encirclement of the sports complex of shiney new buildings.   This has me wondering aloud if the the Foundation will then move to purchase the plot of land across Kimball from the east parking lot and put in a retail center.   The athletic department is wanting to see this happen, they want a more accessible, year round official athletic store, and they'd like to see a resturant/sports bar go in there as well.

Ok well I didn't think of it from a recruiting standpoint. That makes sense now. They need to knock out that damn feed mill on kimbal and Denison....that looks like crap. But, I guess all that plus the stadium renovations will make the area a lot nicer. And nothing looks cooler then that Pat Roberts building surrounded by fence.

I'm a grain science major btw

    Fear the Brick
They are really ruining all the good places for the students to tailgate.  That surgical center on the West side of the stadium really screwed any and all good tailgating for students.  But I'm an alumni who can drink freely in the parking lot, so what do I care?  Put as many nice buildings around the stadium as possible.

Are they trying to push tailgating further away from the stadium or just assuming football will fall back to pre-Snyder status?

So the "good" tailgating is is on the corner of Denison and Kimball??   So that's the mission of KSU . . . provide good tailgating spots??  So when a stud recruit visits when there's no football season, the host just tells them to envision a "great tailgating spot" where sheep roam??

Getting rid of the sheep doesn't really matter with the cattle staying at the same intersection.

At least the sheep weren't visible for recruits visiting on game day.

That's still KSU property...so they still have greater control of what goes on there.  When the surgical center wasn't there and it was just an open grass area, it was entirely more student friendly....which is to say it was easier for the students to do whatever they wanted with mass quantities of alcohol.

Yeah . . . why would anyone think KSU is an "ag school" with (when it's finished) a $75 million dollar Grain Science Complex, just down the street from the Vet School, with the proposed Equine Center just around the corner, and a huge Plant Sciences Center just down the road??

That just screams, "we're not an Ag School" doesn't it??

So did Michael Bishop.

QFT.  You can support ag without having combines and sheep front and center.

There's nothing wrong with being an Ag School . . . but in a roundabout way of agreeing with Fatty, there's no need to leave no doubt as KSU has done for years now around the sports complex.  That area needs to be turned into an area that looks like a major university that has an Ag School, not kept looking like a major university that has some old farm out on the edge of campus.

I think that's crap. These kids don't give a damn about a combine sitting front and center or anything else for that matter related to KSU being an AG school.
The only people who really care are the type of people that visit this board.

USC is SCLA, should we build gangs, graffiti, and a swap meet around the complex to help facilitate recruiting?

I know.  I didn't mean to imply that the sheep fields weren't, just that the space for student tailgating is quite limited now and since the surgical center went up, the fun factor has been quite limited, from what I've been told.
