Justin Woods could not run...hamstring injuries messed up his senior track season.  But he blew away competition in 5A last year winning both 100 and 200.

Newman won the Big 12 hundred and ended up being a pretty good NFL corner.

Lots of high school football kids run track, it helps in their off season conditioning and also shows
what kind of athlete they are.  I would take a kid who could high jump 6 foot 6 and long jump
22 feet over a kid who high jumps 6 foot and long jumps 19 feet.  Of course I am talking about
kids who play skill positions and not lineman types.

Last week at the state meet Nebraska walk-on WR Matt Donahue (6'2 182) high jumped 6'9, ran a 10.85 100, 21.5 200 and a 48.2 400. Colorado State and Ohio have come in late with full ride scholarship offers trying to take him away though.

Congrats.  Jordy was a walk-on and he did a 10.6, 21.5, 48 second 400, and long jumped about 23'. 

If you are trying to insinuate that your walk-ons are better athletes than our scholarship players then LOL.   Jordy...and Watts was a tremendous track athlete in high school.

AAAAAAND I noticed Niles Paul(Mr. rivals 100) only went 11.01 in the 100 in the same race as Donahue.  Soooo...?

Quite a few schools have the Jordy, Donahue types.  But thanks for the info because he does sound like a gifted athlete.

Just clicked on the link...damn...him and the second place guy just destroyed everyone else.  Too bad about Woods.

Niles is not a speed burner. He's a football player though. Hurdles are clearly a better overall measure of athleticism though than straight line 100 is. Running 14.3 and 38.3 in those events if pretty damn good for a guy who weighs 215. He was the 2nd best receiver down in San Antonio for the West team behind Terrance Tolliver. He works out with the Green Bay Packers and has already caught passes from Brett Favre and learned route running and technique from Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson. Lamark...well at least he can run a 10.8 100. Lets see how he catches passes and run routes since he hasn't played the position. Pretty stupid to try and call him a better WR than Paul when he hasn't even played WR. LaMark though should fit right in at K State. Since he played on a 2-8 high school team, he'll feel right at home once he gets to Manhattan.

I played highschool ball against a somewhat fast guy named Maruice Green who I believe ran a 10.2 100 his senior year in highschool. Even though he was fast he still blew at runningback. Hatter needs to take his nose out of the highschool track stats and actually watch kids play football. Speed is very nice but you either have a nose for football or you don't. Hatter should know since he has "seen the bullets fly" firsthand.

Yes, I believe in some cases this year, our walk-ons are equal to or better than a few of the guys you gave scholarships to. Donahue is just one example. If he was in Kansas, do you not think Prince would have offered him? Mike Masin is another guy that I would take anyday of the week over Drinkgern, Roepke or Adams. Masin is 6'7 320 from the biggest class in Nebraska. Kevin Thomsen a 6'2 245 DE (two-star by rivals) had offers from Wyoming and Colorado State, which is two more offers than your two-star recruit Payton Kirk had. 500 lb squat and 360 lb bench. Austin Cassidy and Lance Thorell are also guys who would have gotten serious looks from Prince if they were from Kansas.

Dan, thanks for sharing the Maurice Green story.  I think we're all aware that straightline speed isn't the end all be all but thanks for pointing out the obvious.  Of course if it had no place in discussion then every signing day we wouldn't have college head coaches talk about their recruiting class and how they signed "6 kids who can run a 10.7 or better" or why hundreds of coaches/GM's/NFL personnel go to Indy and invite 300 prospects to run a 40.  Again, thanks for sharing the Green story...we're also aware that while there are Green's there are also Newman's.


Maxell, based on your info Donahue is better than Paul(Green Bay stuff aside).  Masin is a greyshirt according to Masin so he is an offer by NU.  Good for you on Thomsen and supposedly Ian Campbell had an offer to Colorado State he turned down to walk-on at KSU.  For every story of a Masin, Donahue, and Thomsen we have one of those as well....but thanks for the info.

He's not a grayshirt with a guaranteed scholarship, like Schulte is. He's a preferred walkon, as are the others I listed. Preferred walkons are included in the 105 man roster in the fall. They participate in the pre-season drills, and get a playbook just like a regular recruit. Lastly, if a scholarship becomes available, due to a person graduating or leaving school, they are likely to get the scholarship. Its not a guaranteed scholarship offer like a grayshirt. If the kid proves himself worthy of a scholarship down the road, he might be put on scholarship.

I don't know if I can find the right words to describe the performance Apollo's Prince Amukamara put on Friday night against the perennial powerhouse Chaparral Firebirds. Awesome, outstanding, brilliant, incredible and remarkable might not do justice in trying to describe his effort. You really and truly had to be there.

Try tackling these numbers. You might have better success than the Firebirds defenders did Friday night. Amukamara rushed 22-times for 366 yards and four touchdowns. His touchdown runs covered 10, 65, 82, and 97 yards. WOW!!! The kid was simply a one-man show against a very proud and sound Chaparral defense.

The Firebirds did, however, manage to beat Amukamara, uh, I mean Apollo 35-28 in overtime. But all you had to do was watch the customary postgame handshake and hear some of the comments Chaparral players and coaches hurled the direction of Amukamara to understand the big impression he made on this night. "You're the real deal", "I'll see you on Sundays", (a reference to watching him in the NFL) and "I'm glad we don't have to see you again".

For Chaparral players and coaches I'm sure those comments didn't truly justify the performance they saw up close and personal all game long. But it was acknowledgement of an incredible, remarkable, outstanding, oh yeah, we've traveled this road already.

I have a few more numbers for you to try and tackle. Amukamara finished his season with 169 carries for 2,139 yards and 24 touchdowns. He amassed over 3,100 all-purpose yards. He scored 34 total touchdowns including two on the defensive side of the ball.

Next we'll see which college coach is successful in tackling his signature on a letter of intent.

It was a pretty common believe last year that KSU's worst commit was the Adonis Thomas kid from New Jersey.  When he was committed to us NU fans said he was a d-II player at best then we ended up dropping him late in the process (claimed it was for acadmics but not sure) and he had an offer in hand from Toledo in about a day's time.  So much for him or any of our kids being d-II players or not as good as NU walk ons.  He was the biggest reach we had and he went to a very respectable MAC program.  Granted the MAC isn't the big 12 but it's a bunch of levels up from D-II ball.

Also as far as walk ons go I'm sure NU has walk ons coming next fall that will be better then some of their own scholarship players just as KSU has some that will be better then kids that are getting ships.  This isn't an exacty science you never know for sure how a kid will turn out.  Some kids will surprise you and some kids will be busts.
