35% from 3 (53 of 152), 45% overall (146 of 325), and 80% from the FT line (121 of 152). 3rd on the team in scoring (13 PPG) and 4th in rebounding (4.8 RPG).  Chipola played for the NJCAA D1 National Championship, so he was on a very good JUCO team.

Trying to find Gilbert's, but finding stats for Cali JUCO basketball is nearly impossible.  Unless you are willing to pay $100 for a year's sub to a couple sites.

And from his first JUCO season at Salt Lake Community College: led in scoring at 16 PPG, 70% FT (94-135), 48.5% FG (175-361), 43% 3PT (34-79), and 4.4 RPG.

Look at it this way.

Tom Asbury and Jim Wooldridge filled remaining scholarships with nobodies from Yugoslavia and the Ivory Coast.

KSU is filling remaing rides with a guy who originally signed with A&M, a prepster out of DC with very nice upside, and a JC kid who also had another legit D1 offer from Bradley.

It would've been nice to get a Brady Morningstar type but ku got all those already.

I don't remember Bradley or the MVC being legit?  How can you want a guy who's only other college option was to play for a mid-major?  VD at least was good enough for the current coach of Kentucky.  Now that's a badge of honor.  Sammuels will mesh well with the Beas, Sutt, and D Hilly.  These guy have a reason to be signed up.  Gilbert will have to prove us all wrong.  And don't bring Serge into this.  That guy was awesome.  If only there was a conference title for spirit!

To be fair, he sucks balls.  If you don't score >15 pts in JUCO then you are worthless.

This does seem odd and is really where the comparisons with Akeem break down.  Like Wright, Gilbert is an average scorer and solid rebounder for a 2/3 in JUCO.  However, Wright led Neosho in assists (6.7 APG) and was in the top 10 in the nation (JUCOs) in assists.  Wright truly showed he had some diverse guard skills coming in, both as a distributor and rebounder, whereas Gilbert is only a rebounder.  IMO, that makes it less likely Gilbert will have an impact, but we'll see.

If Gilbert was a high school recruit I would say that maybe they just see someone with big potential that could be a project of sort.  But with him being a juco guy and only having 2 years, it seems a little odd.  Most of the time you dip into Juco for immediate help.   

Hell, he could end up being a heck of a player once he's fully healthy and we'll be singin his praises.

Gilbert, who transferred from South Dakota State after the 2005-06 season, was limited this season due to a shoulder injury suffered early in the 2006-07 campaign.

"He was hurt this year," Springer said. "He played in four games this year before he got hurt. Four games in he separated his shoulder and tore the labrum. It took until mid-January or early February, and then it was with a shoulder brace, before he could be effective."

Gilbert underwent surgery after the season.

"He had surgery on it when the season was over. He is in the middle of rehabbing it and everything is coming along well."

Gilbert averaged nine points and eight rebounds in the action he did see during the 2006-07 season. He put up 23 points and 13 rebounds in a season-ending loss to Victor Valley.

"I think he would like to have this done before the end of the signing period," Springer said. "He knows this process and knows the difference between scholarship agreements and letters-of-intent. I think he'd like to get it done, but he wants to do it right. He's been through this before."
