Samuels will be a good bench player, and Gilbert a fine bench warmer.

Judging by most of the threads, we should have at least eleven or twelve impact players.

If both of these guys can come in and be 10-15 MPG players, then they'll be solid pick-ups for late signees.

I see Samuels as having upside and a future; more than likely a role player this year as he develops behind Beasley, then perhaps stepping in to a larger role his SO or JR season.

Gilbert is a role player at best IMO, hopefully a defender/rebounder, who might see some time when needed.  I don't anticipate him being more than that.  An Akeem Wright type, but we'll be in trouble if we need him to play 30 MPG.

I really don't understand the Gilbert signing.  He only has two years to contribute.  It must simply be a move to cover our ass for one season in 2008 after Hostkins, Young, Stewart, Beasley and Walker are gone.  I would have preferred that we save it for next year.

I won't rest easy until I know WHOSE scholly he is taking.  It damn well better be Yearby.

I don't mind it b/c next year we should be signing 4 or 5 players.  I'm sure we're probably recruiting that way.  If we don't have at least one player leaving early next year it will probably be a disappointing season.

At this point, i can see Samuels being a 9-12 minute guy off of the bench for next year.  With Hoskins-Beas-Walker starting in the frontcourt and V-Dub, Samuels, and Lou as backups

The backcourt 2 spots  have 5 guys that will battle for spots.  We have 4 true guards plus Sutton.  Sutton can play the 2 or the 3, but  with all these 6'7 guys coming in..... i think Sutton sees most of his action at the 2 spot.

Gilbert may find it very hard to get on the court next year.  Like Sutton, he can play the 2 or 3 spot, but at this point, i can't see how he fits in.   The following year, he will more likely be a contributor off of the bench.

That still leaves 11 guys trying to get minutes.  I can see Ksu playing 9 guys pretty much every game....... with the 10th and 11th man playing spot roles (meening they won't play in every game)

There is some validity to spreading out the classes.  If you believe that Beasley and Walker will both leave after this next year (I think Beasley is a definite and Walker a possible...dependent if his explosiveness returns during this year or after), then it would be nice to have another guy with a year of experience.  A JuCo kid next year will likely not contribute as much his first year.  I think what you are seeing is a staff that believes they can recruit every year but are trying to build stability.  It seems to me that Gilbert likely adds something that we don't have from the other players and is another athletic guy.  Coach has indicated he wants to trap and initiate pressure more so the bench becomes more valuable...as does athleticism.  I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at this time.  I think they want to spend this summer working on next year's class.  I am excited about Dubo, and Samuels sounds like a player with good upside that they would've chased next year along with many others.  If we can get him in now, let him contribute and he is ready to go the following year.

Was Gilbert ever convicted of anything criminal in relation to that '06 indictment?

As far as those rape charges, Gilbert was tried and acquitted.

I've heard good things about Samuels.

He will be a very good 4 year player I think.

IMO Gilbert was signed to fill the void left by Hoskins, Walker, and Beasley (as said before). JUCO guys produce more in year 2 as opposed to year 1, so this is just to cover the possibility of some juco guy they sign next year and is a bust, at least they'll have a year with Gilbert to see if he is a bust, and can then recruit for need accordingly.
Samuels is an excellent 4 year prospect.
Both likely role players. Getting minutes on next years team will be tough.  What an amazing problem to have.   :ksu:
