Why do you say that?  I am related to the owners, by the way.

Possibly because anyone who has attended KSU knows that the only option in town to buy textbooks is Varney's. I finally wised up and bought what I could off the internet but Varney's can charge whatever they want because they have no competition.

Don't forget the mug on the desk.   :woohoo:
It's a tremendous challenge here. I think it has the opportunity for the greatest turnaround in college football. It is not one to be taken lightly. ---------- Bill Snyder ( Nov 30th, 1988)

I don't understand why people take that stuff personally.  If I had a successful business that you disliked, I could give a ratts ass.

Plus it would probably be awesome for Varney's it's probably insured out the wazzou and they could build a Varney's superstore.

I would feel bad if anyone got hurt, but empty, no injuries.  I wouldn't feel bad.

P.S. Books are insanely expensive at every single college book store in the universe.

If you don't want to spend a lot on books, buy used copies of older editions.  It's really that simple!  You will have to buy online, but that is how you maximize your federal loan dollar, or your parents dollar.  But Varney's sucks, and it sucked 10 years ago.  KSU students really have no choice besides the union.

This is a football board, stop cluttering it with the debate over the virtues and qualities of Varney's bookstore.  The article was about health insurance, not Varney's ripping off students.  For the kids on this board, health insurance is a very real issue.  Be thankful you are covered through school, once you are done you will realize how much of a bitch it is and how much it really costs.

Back to football, Ron Prince is a bully and Josh Freeman is young and overrated playing behind an inept offensive line.  All that said, I think we win 7 or 8 games this year.   :ksu:

Yeah.  It's not something that you can blame Varney's for, folks.  The prices at Varney's are just like they are at bookstores of schools in major metro areas with tons of other bookstores around.  Blame college textbook publishers and the generations of students before you who have paid ridiculous sums of money for textbooks.  Anyway, w00t!  National pub!

If you're dumb enough to sell a book back for pennies on the dollar, I have a hard time feeling sorry for you.  Why should Varney's pay more for old books if they're luring enough desperate souls with the current rates?

Yeah, I learned early on to keep my books.  Buy back doesn't even get you enough $ back to buy some Taco Bell afterwards.  Those books are worth more as reference books later, or maybe your friends might take that class later.

Varney's should not be at fault for running a good business.  I remember (and I'm not that old) when Varney's was a fairly small book store (the rest was a movie theatre, one of two options to watch a movie in Aggieville in fact) and waiting in line to go into the small basement to buy and sellback books.  Then they were able to expand and buyout the Union bookstore as well as put a place in the mall; to me that's just a company that does good business.

I'm in a technical field, and I've used my college textbooks on many, many occasions since graduating (kept the vast majority).  In a non-techical field where advancement means reading new material more than mastering the basics, old textbooks might not be so useful.  If you must sell, hawk the damned things on e-bay for three times the jack.

I remember both of those old theaters.  The one where PI is now would have closed in the mid-90's, right?  The last movie I remember seeing there was Batman Forever in 1995.  (I actually thought it was a good movie at the time.)  The one next to Varneys was open longer than that, probably early 2000s.  I saw Stargate and Pulp Fiction at that one.  The one in Westloop closed in 2000 I believe, but then may have reopened for a short time playing second run movies.  Now we are stuck with only one option, and no student or military discounts anymore.   :-[

Is the Warren group from Wichita still thinking of / planning to put theaters in near the Manhattan mall?

what i love are the teachers that change their required textbook every year, and put a preference on text books that they wrote three words in so they can get a piece of the action.

that crap is a racket.

and as soon as i can, i'm going to retire as a teacher and do the same thing.  gravy train.

God I hope so...grew up in Wichita and the Seth Childs 12 is just depressing to go see a movie in for me because I'm so used to the West Warren.

I blame Varneys for the demise of Dark Horse.   Now that was a great bar, and I know Varneys wasn't really to blame but having a book store where a classic bar used to be us just wrong and blaming the change in drinking age from 18 to 21 would be non PC.

Warren East blows away Warren West.   Old Town is a close second because they don't allow kids after 8pm.

The guy that runs Varney's is a Manhattan native I went to high school with...good guy and, obviously, a good businessman.  Texts are a racket and always have been...don't blame the company that has done well for there being no competition....start a bookstore..its the American way.

The Campus Theatres used to be next to Dark Horse (next to Varney's) and the Varsity Theatre used to be down the street.  In fact, the Varsity was the theatre that had the car dumped through the window in the first "we beat ku in football so we're no longer the worst" football riots.

Oh, and all of us who knew, miss Dark Horse.

Hey doctor clueless....When carmike came to Manhattan in 96, they bought out all 4 movie theaters [from first international, a flailing bankrupt company].  Then they proceeded to close each one down systematically (and proceeded to expand Seth Childs, giving you renovated theatres, better seats, and now all digital screens) because they made no profit.  Don't rag on carmike because they made good business decisions, especially ones that are virutally the same thing that Varney's did in hindsight, IE:bought out the competition.

Try using another company as your scapegoat.

Students ought to just buy from amazon as was mentioned before.  I did for 3 years and saved about 30% on average.  Each year,  One semester I priced my books at varney's at about 400$ for 5 classes, I got all on amazon for about 250$.
