Butler’s contract was purchased from Class AAA Omaha, and he was expected to be in uniform for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Kauffman Stadium.

He was batting .337 in 25 games at Omaha with six homers and 23 RBIs. He also has 18 walks for a .445 on-base percentage.

The Royals cleared space for Butler by placing first baseman Ryan Shealy on the disabled list. Shealy suffered a hamstring injury in Monday’s game while trying to score from second base on a single in the second inning.

The Royals also made a bullpen move by optioning right-hander Ryan Braun to Omaha and recalling left-hander Neal Musser. Braun allowed five runs, five hits and eight walks in 9 1/3 innings over seven appearances.

Musser appeared in two games last month during a brief stay with the big-league club. He allowed one unearned run in one-third of an inning. He has yet to allow a run in 13 innings over seven appearances at Omaha.
