Some of you seem doom-and-gloom about your football program, but the future might be brighter than you think. A lot of people mocked Prince's last recruiting class because of star-values, but it's possible he will get the last laugh, depending on how well he evaluates recruits.

Rivals and Scout aren't the be-all and end-all of recruiting. For spotting talent at the nations largest schools they are usually pretty good, but they don't know anything about kids in smaller schools. There are A LOT of awesome athletes sprinkled throughout the midwest's small towns, and most of them never get any stars from rivals because they are either unknown or considered to be playing "weak" competition. I have to tell you, some of the hardest hits I have ever seen were watching eight-man football.

If Prince is able to base his classes on these talented unknowns, and then pull in a few highly ranked kids from Kansas City, Wichita, Chicago, Omaha, etc, he could have some awesome classes. This is what Nebraska used to do, and this is what Prince seems to be trying to do so far. Nebraska's last championship team in 1997 was made-up mostly of Nebraska-born starters with a few blue chip out-of-staters mixed in.

As for how successful this will be, it really just depends on how well Prince can find and develop the talented unknowns.

All I am saying is, don't let star-values get you down. Prince, whom I revile, could pull this off. I would guess there are hundreds of thousands of high-school seniors each year, and more of them are capable of Division-I football than the few hundred blue chips Rivals digs up.

This is just my take, and honestly I hope Callahan will start looking around Nebraska more.

And because it never hurts to have music in a football thread, here is a classic:

Not that this addresses the core of your post, but that's one thing that I've thought must bug Husker fans about Callahan's (otherwise awesome) recruiting - he largely ignores in-state talent despite so many in-state guys being a big part of husker teams of old.

Yeah, probably a good observation. I just think its an untapped resource that is being forgotten because of how star-driven the recruiting websites make everything.

Callahan seems to be catching on quick though. I think a couple big-time players are going to come out of our last walk-on class, which was pretty great.

Kansas is in the same boat. Lot of unknown talent out there.

"he largely ignores in-state talent despite so many in-state guys being a big part of husker teams of old."

your wrong on both counts.

first.  he is not ignoring in state talent.  It might appear as if he is when comparing to Solich because Solich was a crappy recruiter and had to offer schols to local kids who were not deserving just to fill up his roster.  Callahan only offeres local kids that he thinks can play at a Nebraska level.  it's that simple.  Nebraska doesn't produce 10-15 legit division 1 kids a year, but that is how many solich was offering.

As for the other thing, the NCAA has decided to put rules into effect that hurt Nebraska football, rules put in place to hurt our walk on program.  That was where osborne brought in a majority of our local boys, as walk on's.  We had our share of local starters and stars, but if you look back and some of our biggest and best, they were out of state.  There are many myths about NU football, the local talent thing is probaly the biggest or atleast most often told.  People really want to believe that all TO did was go farm to farm and yank kids of tractors and turn them into football gods but that just aint true.

1) Until this last recruiting class, Callahan and company DID look down their noses at the Nebraska/small-town talent. This last class was much, much better in that regard, so I think they appreciate it now.

2) I said the 1997 team was made up of mostly Nebraska guys with some talented out-of-staters mixed in. See for yourself in the link below. Please don't make me go to the trouble of counting up the starters that were from Nebraska either...someone did on Rivals and if I recall correctly 17 were from Nebraska. Please also note how many guys came from small midwestern towns:

http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=4&SPID=22&DB_OEM_ID=100&KEY=&Q_SEASON=1997

3) Guys you pull out of small towns take longer to develop probably, which is a downside. Callahan is doing a great job of taking walk-ons that could very well make it, as opposed to just taking everyone ala Solich.

4) I refuse to take the homer stance on everything. It makes conversations really boring if you act like everything your team does is perfect.

Yes.

Rivals and scout ruined college recruiting.  Ability no longer matters to fans, now it's about the amount of stars instead.  A coach could recruit 30 4 star defensive backs and the fanbase would be thrilled because "WE GOT A LOT OF TALENTED FOUR STAR PLAYERS!" and they'd have absolutely noone at need positions.

I also think these sites severely underrate midwestern players.  The fact that a lot of our best players are walkons suggests this.  (Jordy Nelson, Marcus Watts, Ian Campbell.)  In the offseason when the rest of the team is off sleeping in and being lazy, these guys are out working on the farm slinging hay and building muscle and work ethic.

Thank you. That's what I am talking about. I don't think it's that the sites always underrate them--a lot of time they just don't have a clue who they are or bother to try to locate them. Because of that, people think they don't exist anymore and they look down on them if coaches do bring them in.

If a coach is able to just pull in highly ranked guys off of rivals, then great. He'll do awesome probably because those guys really are talented. All I am saying though is there are a lot of guys out there who are both really talented and completely unknown to the recruiting websites, so if you have to base your classes on finding them it's not the end of the world.

I'd take Ian Campbell on the huskers in a heartbeat.

Wasn't Ian Campbell just a sophomore last season too? It's amazing how quickly he became dominant.

rivals and scout do a great job of ranking the cream of the crop, but it's impossible for them to evaluate everybody out there, but guys that come from large cities that are accessable(sp?) for their evaluators to get to and see some of those guys in person are usually evaluated well.
