Here's the deal though; USC basketball isn't that good and really hasn't been, so this is a great opportunity for the NCAA.

USC football, that's become another story and they aren't as touchable.
But the NCAA could easily take a 'ship or two from USC basketball and it would be not biggee.  Good chance to 'take a stand' vs one of the big boys, b/c its one of their secondary programs.

i never understood the arguement that the NCAA won't touch one of the big programs in a particular sport.  how does it hurt them to penalize USC?  you're talking about a multibillion dollar corporation who's entire revenue stream is built on its image.

I don't know how much it is true, but it seems that way.

What was the last bigtime program that really took a hit?

i think that has more to do with the fact that the ncaa has chosen to go the path of blind ignorance, i think they have something like 7 people on their entire investigative staff?

i guess my point is that i think the decision they're making is not to not punish a big time program, instead they've decided to notknow about the actions of any programs (to any great extent).

if they don't know about it, then they can't be put in a position of having to punish/not punish a USC or ku.

hell, they rely on self-governance.  if i'm usc would i take the high road and kill my own football program and the hundreds of millions it produces each year?

small schools (the ones that seem to get in trouble) have less to lose when reporting violations and are more incented to report because of it.

i imagine it's incredibly hard to catch someone "cheating".  that's why they reduce penalties so dramatically for self-reporting.  it's the only chance they have.
"these are no longer “games” in the commonly accepted sense of the term. these are free throw shooting contests leavened by the occasional sprint to the other end of the floor."

Isn't it all relevant though?  Just seems like 90k to USC = 25k to SMU.

i don't know if it's relative or not, my guess is that it's actually not apples to apples/relative but i'd have to think about it more before making any type of assertion.

I did.  But I imagine it is relevant to those involved as well.

    The "other" KSU
Quote
Such an act would constitute a major NCAA violation for USC, which is the subject of an ongoing three-year investigation into alleged improprieties in both the football and men’s basketball programs.

THATS the one that I am interested in hearing about... my disgust for the USC fb program is deep.

If USC is able to get a couple of schollies yanked, they will continue to laugh their way to the bank. This aint a little cheating or doinking tutors, this is buying players. IMO, this could be one right up there with point shaving. Rat-bastards... the trifecta of Beas, Walking and Mayo would have been unreal.

The NCAA looks the other way because there is too much money involved, especially in FB. Everyone knows the SEC teams are (have been) cheating but rarely do they do anything about it.

To me, it's about the TV contracts; SEC or Big Ten or Pac 10 could easily "check out" of the NCAA and just play each other and still get big $ and players due to where and who they are.  The NCAA knows this and that is why the NCAA will never drop the hammer on any of the big boys.

tv networks like usc in the rose bowl only because they're really good.  when they go away someone else will take their place and become the usc of today.  like a few years back when use was really bad and abc didn't care that usc wasn't in the rose bowl.

Well, that and the fact that their fanbase is located in the largest TV market in the country.

it'll be disappointing if we don't get any pub in this.  though if its just to clear our name i guess that could be a negative so maybe its all for the better.
