Texas defensive end Henry Melton was pulled over and cited for driving while intoxicated early Friday morning. Melton was pulled over by police after his vehicle was spotted driving in an unsafe manner in the Sixth Street area of Austin.
The Dallas Morning News notes that Melton failed a field sobriety test, was said to be staggering and reportedly smelled of alcohol. Texas coach Mack Brown was out of town, but did address the situation briefly.
"We're disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing," Brown said. "We have a great group of guys and we will thoroughly investigate this situation. Following the completion of the legal process, we will do what's best for the university, Henry and the team. One thing we have really prided ourselves on in our program is our family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family."
Melton spent his first two years at Texas as an oversized running back before moving to defensive end this spring. At nearly 270 pounds he was used mostly in short-yardage situations, but did rush for yards and 10 touchdowns in 2005. With the loss of both DE starters from a year ago Melton was expected to contribute defensively for the Longhorns in 2007.
USC safety Pinkard was arrested May 18th for suspicion of DUI
What did Coach Bill this afternoon?
Well, the decision has been made. He has been removed from the team until further notice.
