This team would be very good with hannah.

Why do you think we're still pissed at him?
-
I'm not :frown:
If anyone knew what's best for the kid, it's his mom.

That's a pretty classy thing to say, for this board anyway. :)

When my son is old enough to play college basketball, I am going to be very vocal about my preference that he play for a white head coach. In fact, I may even override my son's initial choice if that choice is to play for a black head coach. I will be quoted in the paper talking about how I feel that my son needs a good white roll model.
How do you think that will go over?
-
Do we even know that race was even brought up?
-
After seeing him in Big XII play, I question how big of a difference he would make for us. Having another shooter never hurts, but I don't think we'd be top 25 with Hannah like I used to.
-
Do we even know that race was even brought up?
YES. That was THE reason that Hannah's mom wanted him to play for Anderson. She was quoted as such. Read the articles about it.
-
Do we even know that race was even brought up?
Stefhon brought it up:
It really was Stefhon’s ultimate call, he said. But he lists his mom as the “most influential person” in his life.
“She said I’d be playing for a tough coach, an African-American who wants the best out of you,” Hannah said. “It was a wake-up call to me.”
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/15916447.htm
I really don't have a problem with a black kid saying he would be more comfortable with a black coach, though.

Me neither, I was just wondering if people were just assuming race came into the equation.

Neither do I, as long as its also OK for me to say that I want my son to play for a white dude.
-
i agree with rusty re. hannah´s value.
i don´t get the whole outrage about the black coach thing. why latch onto that and ignore the (equally obscure) comments on how his mom wanted him to go to UTEP (who had a white coach), he wanted KSU, and they compromised on MU?
-
That isn't a good comparison.
-
He wants to surround himself with people like himself, BFD.
-
What's his assist/TO ratio.
If a white kid had those remarks in a paper shlt would hit the fan and he might lose his schol. offer.

B/c he didn't choose us. And I think if the whole LOI mess hadn't happened it wouldn't be near as big. But the way it went down and him choosing someone who is sort of a rival, I can see why our fans have reacted the way they have. That's just the way fans our, especially those that read every line of type about these situations and hang out on messageboards. :)

Because that's a lot different.

Imagine if Jason Bennett's choice had come down to KSU vs. Mizzou, and he chose KSU, and said afterwards: "My mom said I'd be playing for a tough coach, a white man who wants the best out of you," Bennett said. "It was a wake-up call to me."
That's the thing. People would cringe if JB said that. Everyone wants equality and racial harmony, but they are unwilling to step up to the plate and call it what it is when its not a white person who says something racist or discriminates on the basis of race.

I don't see what difference the color of someone's skin makes when your goal is to learn how to play hard and win games. I wonder if Cartier and Dave are uncomfortable with Huggins because he's white.
If it's a personality thing, if it's a matter of his mom looking at the trouble that some of Huggins' players have gotten into in the past, fine. But that has nothing to do with race, and I don't see why he chose to bring that up. Maybe he and Larry Johnson should get together and commisserate about how they need a coach that understands their unique problems.
-
"Maybe he and Larry Johnson should get together and commisserate about how they need a coach that understands their unique problems."
Maybe mike anderson slipped mrs. hannah his tootsie roll log.

The difference is JB's going to a school that's 85% or so white either way - he's not a minority. If Bennett was from somewhere like Yugoslavia and said he chose a school based on a high Yugoslav population or a Yugoslav coach, there probably isn't a problem.
Like lynch said, it's a comfort thing. Being an extreme minority in almost any situation can be uncomfortable and intimidating.

Fair warning.....
The boobs over at ESPN.com are coming over here and stealing our material in an obviously failed attempt to keep their little board alive which wouldn't be an issue if I were still over there but that's a long drawn out story. Anyways.....Just a warning to be careful who you're talking to.

Point Slimz
Whether you like it or not, if a white kid saying it is racist, then a black kid saying it is racist as well. There should be no double standard, and until there is not double standard society will not be able to move past that.

How many of your next door neighbors are black? It happens all the time.

Mizzou is 90% white. Hannah is an even more extreme minority there.

The neighbors just north of me are lesbians.
What do I win?
-
I'm just saying its natural to have a desire to be in a community of people like yourself.

If your black it's natural
If you are white it's racism**

I think if you're white it's called "suburbia".

thats why I posted that question above. It happens all time the other way around, but if you're not a minority its not as obvious.

My next door neighbors are Chinese. The neighbors across from me are African-American. Of course, that's not too common here in Kansas, and Rusty's point is a good one.
I don't think the issue here is community, though. As I noted above, Mizzou is less diverse than KSU. Dalonte Hill and Eric Martin and plenty of KSU players are African-American. The way that Hannah's quote was phrased, it appears that his mother made some significant point of the fact that Mike Anderson is an African-American and Bob Huggins is not. The only issue, as Hannah phrased it, seems to be the race of two individuals. Hannah's mom probably felt that Anderson would care more about Stefhon as a person and not just as a basketball player, and Anderson being African-American probably played into this equation, and Hannah chose a poor way to phrase it.

Interesting the Petro is having a conversation with a similar slant today on his show...
Folks, whether we like it or not there are biases in this country from all of us. Everybody. To me "racism" goes beyond bias and to putting someone else down b/c they are not of your race. This could be interpreted as racism, but I think that's taking it too far, and frankly its easy for white people to do it b/c we've probably never experience racism. However, though the severity may not be like it was in the 50s, it still happens. Take a basketball team with 15 of 18 kids of color to a small town where everyone looks the same and you will notice some stares, and sometimes a negative vibe. I know b/c I've done it, and I'm white; but b/c I had a connection with the kids I still felt it.
Well, to get back to the point, to me this is more of a bias, which aren't necessarily bad. I really think Rusty's analogy is much more appropriate. Really, no one got hurt or put down by his comment. It didn't cause Huggins any trauma and it really didn't cause us any harm. He simply chose MU over KSU, and his connection to the coach was part of it. One connection was that they were the same race, which is a minority situation so its easy to go down the racism road with it, but I don't think that's the case. If racism was truly involved, Hannah would've never considered K-State in the first place. And judging by the comments, I think the mom's bias toward Huggins was based on his reputation, it had nothing to do with him being white.
That said, I have no problem with "mamas boy" ribbing when he comes here b/c that was part of how it went down. I don't have any problem with our fans being upset about that, I just don't think race should be the big issue here.
Okay, that's enough rant, back to basketball discussion. :)

If Hannah and Mayo weren't scum, they'd play for The Purple. You don't really need to go any deeper than that.
-
Racism is alive and well it's just not as overt as it was 40 years ago. That is all.
I'd love to have hannah on ths team. Anyone know what his assist/TO is?

That ratio is almost identical to DGBY's, (who sucks, apparently).

Avg. 4.8 Assists/game
Avg. 3.5 TO/Game

We'd have Hannah instead of Maybank. Anyone who wouldn't take that is nuts, no disrespect meant to Maybank.
That said, Hannah is running into a pretty typical mid-year slump for a JUCO guy. It would be great to have Stewart, Hannah, and Young as a rotation at PG, though we'd play 2 of these guys together a lot. I think Hannah would've struggled some at PG for us as well. Horton has been playing PG a lot more for MU lately and has better A-TO #s than Hannah.
-
crap, I had no idea my fark would start a racial debate. :blindfold:
-
If Hannah's mother wanted him to play for a black coach, it's stupid to assume that it's because of race. It could very well be that she wants a black male role model for him. Among African American's, and the stigma associated with black males being less than honorable (which I don't agree with, but exists) it's not uncommon for young boys to be influenced by men of a less than honorable nature. Hannah's mom fits the profile of someone who wants her son to have positive role models of the same color and you can't fault her for that.
-

100 percent right on.

If Hannah's mother wanted him to play for a black coach, it's stupid to assume that it's because of race.
No, what's stupid is that statement. If Hannah's mom wanted him to play for a black coach because he is black as opposed to white, then it's ALL about race. If race is taken into account in any way, shape, or form, then race is a factor. Period. And that's not an assumption.
-
To give an example of the mentality espoused by some in this thread I provide the following lesson:
College Republicans on several campuses across the country have offered "white only" scholarships to "expose the hypocrisy" or affirmative action. The "point" they try to make is stupid because it willfully ignores the following realities:
*We all know, or should know, the history of systematic disenfranchisement of African Americans in this country by whites
*This system created realities that continue to impact the lives of African Americans in this country
*At Universities, excluding traditionally black colleges, Stefon is part of a small minority of students
Mj's post is well put and I think people need to stop being such knee-jerk reactionarys and play a little role reversal game before they blare some sort of reverse-racism rant.

No, it's not all about race. You're just a racist if you can't see past the reality. BTW: I'm hispanic. I suppose that if I choose to have someone make taco's and I only want mexican's.. I guess it's because it's about race?
The problem you have here is understanding what she really wants. It's wrong of you to assume that it's all because of race. If you do, then who is really hung up on race? Like I said, she more than likely wants a positive black role model for her son. There is nothing wrong with that.. period.
Go get yourself a mocha latte and call it day before you say something even more profoundly stupid.
-
BTW: That's the last I'm saying on this subject. If this subject starts to get out of hand, I'm gonna move this thread.
So, someone needs to post something about Hannah's whining and others need to start photoshopping and posting on crybaby's mentality.

Profoundly stupid? I don't give a f*ck whether you're black, white, brown, yellow, or green...if you acknowledge someone's race when making a personnel decision, then race is most certainly "a part of it." It's pretty simple.
Let's take a look-see a little analogy, shall we?
I want to buy a car. I compare two models: A and B. I decide that Model A is really the better car based on all-around performance. However, I've always had this thing for red cars, and Model A isn't available in red; Model B is. In the end, I buy Model B.
Now, would you say Model B played a part in my decision, or would you actually be so bold as to say, "If kougar wanted a red car, it's stupid to assume that it's because of paint color"?
Listen, I know where you and KK are going with your arguments, but in this day and age, when it comes down to a player choosing one coach over another—not because of the coach's track record, style of play, or program, but because of the color of his skin—then yes, his decision was "because of race."
I suppose that if I choose to have someone make taco's and I only want mexican's.. I guess it's because it's about race?
For that analogy to work, you'd have to assume that black people naturally make better basketball coaches than white people. That what you're claiming?
-
Again, I think it important to differentiate between racism and bias. The comment is too ambiguous to assume racism, though in our PC world simply b/c you use a label people are going to jump on it.
Plus consider that of the 4 programs that Hannah visited, only 1 had a black coach. Sure, he ended up there, but if this was a real case of racism, then that wouldn't have been the case. mjrod's point about male role models is spot on. Plus, I think at the end of the day the real bias from Hannah's mom was toward Huggins' reputation not his race. Also, based on the quotes, Anderson did a great job of recruiting the mom as well as the kid which happens all the time. There is no overt racism here IMO.
Again, I don't like how it went down with Hannah committing to us, then switching last minute b/c of mom's influence. If she really didn't want him to go play for Huggins, then she should've made that clear b/c its obvious he was going to listen. For this, he deserves all the "mamas boy" flack we can give him next wednesday night.

Rusty is racist.
-
I am so disappointed. When I opened this thread I thought it was a "CALL to Action" to get the student section to chant Momma's Boy everytime he touches the ball.
That would be sweet and definitely what he deserves. Tough to just shrug that off and not let it bother you if it happens ALL GAME LONG!!!
How can we make that happen?

taking a boring thread and turning into a more interesting discussion isn´t hijacking.

Mamma's boys don't bother me so much. And racism is pretty much a dead issue these days. I'm more interested in discussing what makes Hannah such a bad person.

Fair enough. :) I actually didn't mean that in a negative way; threads get hijacked most of the time, and people just bitch about it too much.
