Title: things that interest you
Post by: Rick Daris on October 07, 2009, 11:14:35 PM
that don't interest 99% of people as much as they interest you and why (maybe).

1) new zealand-almost moved there two years ago. still want to live there at some point in time. own books about it and still have a couple of new zealand online newspapers that i check weekly.

2) jamaica/jamaican food- have spent a total of three weeks there. love negril cliffs. if i could (i can't), i'd move there and live there the rest of my life. love jerk chicken. hunt out jamaican restaurants anytime i'm in a new town. three in my area that i know of. little grill-mhk. caribbean negril-junction city. g's-kc.

3)travel deals- constantly look at travel websites and cheap hotel deals and stuff like that. sometimes look up random cities that i've never been to and try to find out where i'd want to stay and how i'd get there and how cheap i could get it and stuff.

4)just realized all my things were travel type things. so #4 is ears. ears interest me. no real reason.

I've got a good friend from Lower Hut New Zealand.  He tried to get me into Rugby - He's a huge all blacks fan.  Also an OU fan... go figure.  I'd love to go to NZ some day.

I was really trying to think of something; but most of the things I'm interested most likely have several people that are also interested in them.   This thread has just made me feel lame. But anyway; most obscure interest I can think of.
1) Sculptures.  Auguste Rodin's work fascinates me.
2) B/W Photography Darkroom
3) Archery

Recent interest that may just turn out to by my flavor of the month
4) wanting to learn German
5) Wanting to learn the Violin &/or Stand up bass.

Mine are very similar to Daris' 1-3.

1) NYC:  Envy the hell out of GOSP and Bhyaaa for living there.  I'm in the city about 3-5 times a year for work and still take the wife at least once a year to visit.  I think my obsession may come from growing up on a ranch out in the middle of nowhere. I love the feeling of being able to eat/do/see pretty much anything in total anonymity while surrounded by people.

2) Hawaii:  Mainly the North Shore of Oahu but love all of it.  Best restraunt I ever ate at was Alan Wong's.  Hillwalking may like Hawaii more than me though, not sure.

3) Travel deals like Daris said.  Kind of obssessed with Delta Skymiles and Hilton Honors as far as points go.  Have both the credit cards.  Signed up all our cards under the Delta Skymiles dining points thing.  Have vicious all out brawls with HR about business travel when I demand to stay at the Double Tree an hour away from the meeting because it's the closest Hilton hotel or fly in 7 hours early because it's the only Delta/Northwest flight available.

4) Buffalo Wild Wings.  I eat here every thursday with my brother.  Pretty much addicted to the combination of BWW Hot and BWW blue cheese.  Bought stock in the company so try to recoup some of my losses to the damn place.

gonna have to copy some of the already listeds.

in no order:

travel deals
knives and sharpness of said objects (i travel w. my own knives, hate using bad ones)
languages/etymology, especially links btwn romance langs and english
accents/dialects (not the accents of a non native speaker, but different regional/class accents.  especially of spanish and english)
college bball/bball recruiting
snakes
rodents
breeds of domestic animals
wine
making foods (not cooking, but making stuff that people often buy, like cheese or pickles, etc.).  have a feeling ol' chings will be copying me here.  lol.
maps
bread/pizza

i could go on and on.  i have a lot of uncommon interests.

Sys, you are not the top chef.  Please pack your knives and go.

@sys
sys.  if you like pizza/dough/bread, i have two great resources for you.  the first is a book that every bread maker needs to have in his/her library-

second, a pizza website where the guy gets really in depth about dough making-
http://slice.seriouseats.com/jvpizza/

@OP
here are some things that interest me-
bread/pizza making.  i have spent several years learning how to cook pizza from scratch.  it's a fantastic hobby because there are an unlimited set of variables to continue to tweak.  it's like golf in that it's something incredibly hard to perfect, except it is actually fun.

wine.  again, like bread, wine is something that is incredibly detailed and something that is impossible to completely perfect.  i love trying new wines and buying and then aging wines.  own a ton of wine.

cooking.  i love to cook anything.  currently in the "smoked foods" chapter of my cooking career.  i've spent almost every saturday since early spring cooking on my smoker.  again, incredibly detailed and tons of variables to play with making it difficult to master.

skiing/colorado.  what's not to love right?  very interested in the many things to do in colorado.  want to move there but not sure if i want to.

mountainbiking.  they say that sundays are made for football.  i spit in there faces.  sundays are meant for a fast singletrack with your friends, or without your friends if you don't have any.  it sucks when it gets really hot but i love it in the spring and the fall.  generally i get scared of snakes and wood ticks, both of which love mountainbike trails.  tons of great trails in the kc area too.  want to visit my friend who lives near Taos and ride with him.  would feel incredibly elite bringing my bike to NM.

photography.  have spent a lot of time learning the intricacies of photography and love the creative aspect of it.

oil painting/pastel.  baroque? neo-impressionism? roccoco? impressionism? modern?

hiking.  have hiked a ton of the peaks throughout the adirondacks.  would like to do the same in the rockies.  once ran into a bear on the trail, kept walking but was scared.

people.  i love meeting new people and learning about what makes them tick, what they do, and how they do it.  learn from them what works and what doesn't.

basketball.  omfg it's almost here.  love watching a team and disecting it's strengths/weaknesses, watching a team grow.  huggy's season herer was almost unbearable for me to watch.

thx for the book tip 'clams, gonna have to check that out.

here's a similar little tip for fellow domestic animal enthusiasts.  if you only read one book about domestic animals this year, make it this one.

and a tidbit for fellow food makers - making quince butter tonight.   :lick:

A lot of these probably interest other people.

football: schemes, offensive formations, creating advantages
basketball: similar, more focused ond defense though
watercolor painting: landscapes, color
golf: playing, right now "fixing" my driver
diy home stuff: but I've had about enough of it
digital video production
the bible: study, particularly how the original languages translate into English
beer: like to try new ones
photoshop: just messing around though

Weather - Love watching forecasts and seeing days in advance when storms are coming. Love the nights before snowstorms come in. Always hoping for over 12 inches of snow. Absolutely love storm season. Love watching Radar and seeing how storms form. Probably have seen the Greensburg radar footage at least 100 times. Cannot WAIT for the new season of Storm Chasers on Discovery on Oct. 18th!

NASCAR - I know its popular, just not on this board. Parents watched it when i was growing up, so now i watch it every Sunday. It is a lot more interesting if you actually have a favorite driver.

1.  RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) Calculators.  Hewlett Packard and otherwise.  I have some Soviet RPN Calulators as well as Novus, National Semiconductor and Omron models.  These interest me because I'm an engineer and fulltime geek.

2.  Cycling !  I used to cycle a bunch.  Not so much anymore.  Still love to follow the Tour de France and took time to see the Tour of Missouri time trial stage in Sedalia this year.  Here is George Hincapie checking out the route prior to the 'Race of Truth' :

5.  KSUFans.com.   I spend way too much time on these boards...

Lets see...

conspiracy theories, and kooky occulty stuff (illuminati, rosa crucia, templars, homunculi, etc...) because its amazing how people come up with this stuff and shows the human need for order in the Universe.

cooking (from making basic ingredients to final assembly)  It's fun to make things, doubly so from scratch.

Rome (Late Republic Era) One of the most important time periods in human history

Mythology (of all types, not just Greek) Myths speak to the primal human condition and probably the most powerul and honest portrayal of how humanity deals with existence.  The consistency in archetypes across all cultures is stunning.

Quantum Mechanics Its amazing how such a simple theory can explain so much and yet lead to so many complications.

60's Ska I just like it!

Bollywood Movies  Real hit or miss, but the hits are always spectacular.

Newsradio Probably the biggest fan of the show in the whole world.

poker - always liked it, never thought it would be a job.  play a really mathematical style, love analyzing difficult hands, either through chatting about it or running a program, just trying to figure sh*t out.

music - love mainstream rap and pop.  also tried to make rap beats before, huge fail.  i used to be quite good at playing the cello, but that doesn't translate to creativity.  want to learn how to dj and mix/mash since it seems fun.

pool - love playing and gambling.  would like to eventually take formal lessons to crush souls.

pua/social dynamics - say what you want :)  not just w/ girls or whatever, but just being more talkative and outgoing with everyone.  always been quiet, and am just trying to improve in that aspect.  also goes kind of along w/ what pissclams says, its really interesting stuff, finding out how everything works.  i'm not hardcore into it or try and be cheesy like the show, just download ebooks on the topic and read when i am bored.

trying to think of what interests me but not others makes me realize i'm not a deep person.  oh well.  maybe why i am so anti-elite music, it is boring.  i find life's more enjoyable just seeking out fun wherever, and living without rules. :)

Tobacco Tins- Have been collecting them for some time now.  Have a Times Square, Forest and Stream and a Three Twins tin that are probably my favorites and most expensive if I tried to sell.

Shuffleboard- I feel pretty comfortable saying that I think I'm one of the best in Kansas.  Lowest rated anyway.  (that would be the bar type and not the kind you play on a ship.)

Here is my non-sports list.

1. Photography/Designing — Hopefully getting my own biznitch up and running soon.  :hope:
2. Cigars — have a nice humidor stuffed with cigars. Nice to have every now and then.
3. People — Just read 'clams entry on what he said about people. It applies to me as well.
4. Collecting Cards of HOF'ers with a piece of bat, jersey, or autograph on it. Have a nice collection I'll sell down the road. (DiMaggio, Mantle, J. Robinson, Elway, etc.)
5. Making a family.
6. Whiskey/Scotch — love it.
7. Smokin' meats — Now is the perfect time.
8. Ebay — JFC I'm addicted

I'm sure there are more, but I don't have time to sit and think and type it out.

Have been having groups of people over for dinner.  Think I will continue expanding that circle.

Reading: books/magazines/online (should do this more)

Guitar Amps (not for a long time, but can basically could sell these)

Would like to get more in to:

travel deals, cheap stuff, cooking, stocks, mythology and ancient civilizations.

music - I read like 50 mp3 blogs and listen to about 50 new mp3's a day.  I obsess over finding new stuff and it just makes my day when I hear something that makes me stop what I'm doing to hear a sound combo I've never heard before.

yoga - not really obsessive, but I could be.  I love doing it.  If I didn't live in a BFE POS town, I'd probably be obsessive about yoga.

being cheap/saving - I love pinching pennies while pouring as much money as possible into retirement and 529 accounts.

being green - If I can help it, I recycle, reuse, etc.  it started because they opened a landfill close to my parents.

cities - they're just awesome.  I'm kind of like SD - growing up in a small town where everybody knows you and has a preconceived notion about you makes the anonimity of a city liberating.

I love swords and other classic weaponry, particularly Japanese and other SE Asian stuff. Fascinated with Japan and SE Asia in general, culture past and present and whatnot. Would love to get a bunch of stuff to decorate my room with like swords on the wall, and those little bamboo tubes that fill with water until they lower enough to dump it out, then fill up again. Maybe a little bonsai tree or something.

I also love crazy old English accents and dialects. I'd like to marry a woman from Cockney just so I could always listen to her say stuff all the time, and just be like "" 24/7.

Awesome to hear it's as amazing as I thought it would be. Might have to make a trip to the Motherland and find me a woman one of these years.

Wow.  This thread makes me feel really shallow.

I majored in Philosophy, so I got kinda burned out on reading it.  I enjoy talking about it, but no longer enjoy reading it.

I like bullcrapting with people.  Typically while under the influence.

I really enjoy spectacles/events.  The more fracked up the better.

You should go to Vegas for the UNLV game.  TONS of EMAW from this board going.

Bats
Non-invasive medical imaging (CT, MRI, etc)
Deserts
Paleontology
P.G. Wodehouse

Dude, I just got four bat houses to hang in my back yard.  Add bats to my list as well, but not deserts...I have no sweat-tooth at all.

Cool.  (not sure how recent "just" is, but you probably won't get any bats in them until the spring now)

I should have also put tropical rain-forests on my list.  I definitely have the sweat-tooth.

One for the upstairs, one for the downstairs.  At first, it seemed pretty cool.  Then I realized that they entailed twice as many repair bills, so I learned to fix them on my own.

You kinda look like Tony Hawk, kinda.  But, given your tallness, your head could hit critical velocity by the time it falls all the way up there on your neck to the concrete.  So, wear a helmet is what I'm saying.

I don't street skate.  Too old to learn something "new."  I like bowls, transitions, and parks with great flow.  Not too much of that in KS.  Concretedisciples, com has a pretty good skatepark locator.  Check out Louisville if you want to see an impressive one.

- Thrift stores - I've never bought underwear from thrift stores and never seen anyone else buy underwear from thrift stores - but I'm fascinated that they sell underwear at thrift stores and hope to one day witness an actual purchase of thrift store underwear.

- "Missed Connections" on craigslist.

- Searching for my stolen bicycles (theres been 3 in the last 4 years) on craigslist and ebay. I've never found one of them btw.

I've decided I'm not going to fix my xbox 360.

CHINGON EXPECT A DINNER INVITE!

pffffft  LOL

so I got bored and started trying to figure out where to send off my xbox to get fixed and what not, then I was all like "let's try it one more time before I send it off..." AND IT WORKED!

LOL @ reading, having people over for dinner, ancient civs etc.

FIFA 10 FTW!!

I've been starting to read about some "underground" American History.  Like, stuff your high school history books don't tell you because it's not a pretty picture.  For example, did you know Helen Keller grew up to be an adamant socialist and union leader?  I didn't! But I do now, and so do you.

- weather
- sports in general
- golf architecture
- traveling (exciting to go to a new place and absolutely fall in love with it by the time you leave)
- judging people the first time i meet them and after hanging with them a few times to see if my first impression was the right one of them
- trying new recipes/bbqing (if i could grill once a day i would never eat out again)
- gambling
- finding ways to not pay for things (watching movies that are in theaters online, coupons for free meals, etc)
- mowing the yard/outside work (getting my daily 'me' time is important for my sanity)
- trying to find out what triggered my fear of flying and trying to overcome it (flew a lot in my late teens/early 20's then one day on a flight from PHX to STL i got all freaked out and have only flown twice in the past 3 years)
- photography (just the act of taking a picture and seeing the outcome, not the camera itself)

could go on, but those are the first things that come to mind.

what are some "gems" that you've found?

m-cat - I found two Miles Davis albums in pristine conditions a couple of months ago at a Salvation Army (49Cents!!!!)... which I think is pretty amazing. Also, I've found a couple of Talking Heads albums recently. '70's Stones, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Jeff Beck, Laura Nyro...  errrrr, The Carpenters. (The latter should probably be filed under guilty pleasure, but the recording and productions of their records is almost unparalleled.)

I think the reason I like the thrift shopping is because I will commit to a purchase even if I don't know that much about the artist... if the wax is in good condition and the artwork is fair, I'll pay 50 cents or a buck to listen to some new music... and I always listen to it before filing it. Of course I'm not keeping up on cutting edge music by doing this, but I am constantly introducing myself to stuff I've never given a shot before.

kick-ass thread (literally)

1. Auto racing--not like spec race cars dressed up as billboards going in circles, but open wheel stuff like Formula 1 and Indy.  If I was really elite I'd be into sports cars (IMSA,ALMS), but I am only if it's amateur stuff like SCCA.  I really like cars... I usually have 2 and get a different one every year (generally used.)

2. Electronic music/aka Euro-trash.  Tired of rock and pop, I got into music that 15 year olds and foreigners think is "cool."

3. Maps of the United States.  I can pore over the US Atlas for hours looking at different cities.  I know a lot of places I've never been to like the back of my hand.

4. The weather report.  Okay a lot of people are into this, but I am pretty much constantly plugged into the weather if there is any precip involved.  When I talk about the weather it's not just small talk.  (I hate small talk)

5. See Cyclist's thing on cycling.

6.  Breasts.  Big, round plump ones.  The kind that jiggle when you walk, but not without purpose.  Small and perky will do in a pinch.

7. The Southwest, especially Utah.  Its so full of nothing and everything at the same time.  I like big, wide open expanses devoid of people or industry.

8. Talk radio.  I listen to it enough that it's probably unhealthy.  I've outgrown most of the commercial shouting and pretty much stick to NPR now.

Used to be an SCCA member for years, grew up near Wichita and attended the Lake Afton GP for something like 13 years straight until they stopped holding it.  LOVE SCCA, avid follower of F1 as well.  What region and what classes are you in?

Love, LOVE roller coasters.

Have a buddy from Ohio who says you haven't been to an amusement park until you've been to Cedar Point. :yikes:

forgot one:  feeling the weird, new bump/tumor right next to my asshole and wondering if it is ass cancer.  this is a pretty recent interest for me, but very engrossing.

:dunno:

I had one, had to have surgery.  It was like, ridiculously painful post-surgery.

May be just a bit of hypochondria coming on, but I do have a strange bump right in that region described.  Kinda tender but not really painful unless I mess with it.  How were you diagnosed?  Just walked up to a doctor and asked him to check out your brown eye?  Actually have a scheduled physical coming up, so I may or may not mention it to him.   :eyeseeyou:

yeah, just told the doctor to look at it.  it took about 10 seconds to diagnose and send me to a surgeon.  It would be kind of stupid to not mention it to your doctor.

not my photo but I do love to hike. Don't get to as much as I'd like but it's tough to beat the thrill of bagging peaks. The photo is from 14ers as is this one:

Love building me a nice pool in that game, prob. is the guests forget you have actual rides and just swim and then leave the park.

Hah oh yeah I love curling during the Olympics.  Can't wait for Vancouver!

There's some chance we know each other.  I used to be in Wichita Region, now I'm in Colorado Region.  I've driven a few different stock and street tire classes in autocross.

Doubt it, I was strictly a viewer, outside of the Haupt girls stopping by our little gig that is.      We were the band of very drunk and high rowdies at the best spot on the track every year (just W and N of clubhouse turn where you could see straight through to the exit).   Some of the drivers used to come by and toss us T-Shirts and such.  I think they appreciated how involved we were in the racing, and we were.   Used to have probably 15 to 30 there at any one time.  Always camped over on the E side w/ kegs o'plenty.  So what did you drive, I amazingly remember most cars?  (pm if more comfortable)
